Father Grima, along with parishoners from the church and: with the blessing of a Cardinal, has agreed to donate a section of land belonging to the church on 266 Scugog Street, on the north side of several acres that already houses the church and the nearly com- pleted Immaculate Conception School. The priest agreed to the donation after succombing to pressure from parishoners and others in the com- munity who are worried about lack of housing for senior citizens. In actuality, the land won't be donated. The property will be sold to a non-profit charitable organiza- tion for one dollar, and it will be this corporation, already in existance, that will look after the building. Funds will be secured from a con- ventional lending institution, and the Ministry of Housing will guarantee the loan and provide subsidies to en- sure a low interest rate, with all sav- ings passed on to tenants. The tenants in question include anyone 60 years of age or older, and can come from any denominational background. At a public meeting held to discuss the proposal in Township of Scugog council chambers August 25, a lawyer for the proposal stressed that just because the Catholic Church has donated the land, the apartments - are not limited to Catholic senior citizens. "It will be open to anyone," Father Grima added. Before the building goes any fur- ther, however, council must first ap- . prove re-zoning for the property in- - - volved, from Community Facility to a RM4 designation, which would allow a residential development such as the seniors apartment. The Monday night public meeting was held in order to give neighbours and interested parties a chance to voice their opinions and ask ques- tions about the proposal. Local resident Diane Lackie was concerned about the location of the proposal, calling the area "a boom- Wildlife art and carvings ~The first exhibition of the season at the Scugog Memorial Library will be held September 13 to October 3. It will feature the work of wildlife 'artist David Alexander Risk and the Birdseye Centre Carving Club. : David, completely self-taught and iwhile still in his mid 20's, has 'located both home and studio in the 'Haliburton Highlands. His full-time devotion to painting has led to the 'purchase of his artwork for private 'collections within Canada and 'internationally. He has a great love and apprecia- tion of nature and his perception of it is expressed in his paintings as he strives for extreme realism. The Birdseye Centre Carving Club draws its members from Scugog Township and the surrounding area. Their prize-winning bird carvings are gaining recognition far and wide. David Risk and some of the carvers will be present at the Library on Saturday, September 13 from 2-4 p.m. The public is invited to view this exciting exhibition and meet the artists. ing place." She wondered aloud if the proposal, along with the church, the Catholic School and nearby R.H. Cornish Public School wouldn't make the area too "busy." "It's a very busy spot right now," she said. And with regards to the number of developments already on the church property (the church and the school), she said, "I'm just wondering how many things they as illustrated. can put on 6.7 acres." Ash Street resident Norm Philip was worried about the proximity of the proposed development, and whether or not it would affect the drainage on his property. Access to the proposed building is planned to come from Ash Street. Councillors will decide whether or not to approve the re-zoning within T VV - the next few weeks.
