Waterfowl viewing day at the Lynde Shores Conservation Area Late September is the time for a visit to our lakeshore marshes to see migrating flocks of waterfowl. In re- cent weeks, highly visible (and audi- ble!) flocks of Canada Geese have been arriving daily as they move south for the winter. Canada Geese, which may weigh up to 18 lbs. are certainly the most prominent of our waterfowl species. It is difficult to imagine' that these geese were a rare sight in Durham Region during the summer a mere 15 years ago. On Sunday, September 28, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority will host a Waterfowl Viewing Day at Lynde Shore Con- servation Area. Naturalist will have a telescope set 'up at the east viewing platform on Cranberry Marsh from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cranberry Marsh is a popular migration stop-over for upwards of two dozen species of waterfow. Of particular interest are the five Trumpeter Swan cygnets with their Mute Swan "foster parents." This is the only site in Ontario where the en- dangered Trumpeter Swans may be seen in the wild until they disperse "for the winter. A great variety of other water and land birds may also be seen in the conservation area. The Lynde Shores Conservation Area parking lot is located on the south side of Victoria Street (also known as Bayly Street or Baseline Road), 1 km east of Durham Regional Road 23. To reach the viewing platform, walk south onthe dirt road for about 15 minutes. The platform is on the west (right) side of the road. After having a look through the telescope, visitors may wish to continue south to the lakeshore. Many local residents have been' fortunate to see this exceptional team, many of whom live in the* Brooklin area, play this year, and work their way up the ladder to the pinnacle. Last year, this same team won the Eastern Ontario Championship title but lost in their efforts for the pro- vincial honours. Not again this year. The All-Ontario Championships were held this year in Peterborough with Whitby, Leamington, Strat- ford, Burlington, Orillia and the host team vying for the crown. In their first game, on Saturday morning, Whitby beat Burlington 6-5 in extra innings. The afternoon saw the team take on Peterborough. As §| Whitby Junior squad 8 has won it dll..... the t'o squads were tied in their own division at three games each, this would also decide the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association Cham- pionship. Whitby won when the mer- cy rule was called after they took a 12-2 lead. This gave Whitby an overall record of 31-13-1. An 8-5 win over Orillia on Sunday morning sent Whitby to the finals undefeated. Their opponents were to be Leamington, who had previous- ly had one loss. Whitby lost the first game 6-4, then came back the following day to take Leamington 4-2 to win the Ontario Junior B Championship. Scott Burnett pitched the final game and had a no hitter going for himself until the seventh inning. As it was, he allowed only one hit and was chosen the most valuable player of the playoff tournament. Jaycettes may be just what you've been looking for! Viewpoint From page 18 ~ As I understand it, it took them a good half hour to revive the poor old nurse. And where is Johnson now? ...... we're not sure. A little levity I know, but you get the drift. Let's face it, if some folks are clever and sneaky enough to hide the fact they are taking drugs from their team-mates and coaches, they will find a way to circumvent a urinalysis to test for those drugs. In an article a few weeks ago, my cohert Cathy Olliffe did a piece on drugs. She quoted figures taken from Time magazine that told of the work- ing hours lost to employers each year due to drugs. Can't remember exactly what those figures are right now, but I recall it was astronomical how many hours were lost by employees taking drugs. | So will we soon see a urine test made mandatory when a person applies for a position in § a company. Will there then be regular follow-up tests for all employees, or will they be spur of the moment things, like spot inspections in the armed forces? So you see why I am in a quandry. One part of me says "go for it." If you have nothing to fear, you don't take drugs, what's the problem with taking these tests. The other part of me says 'hold the phone," this is my life and my business what I do, and I take grave exception that you would suggest I am a druggy. So what do you do. And for that matter what can anyone do? Don't ask me .... I'm still wrestling with the matter myself.
