24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 30, 1986 Reaching finals for league championship with Unionville Port Pee Wees gave it their best shot by Clair Cornish On September 1° & 14, the Port Perry Pee Wee Softball team com- peted in their league-ending tourna- ment. They fought off tough com- petition, bad weather, and having to wake up early to make this a most successful weekend. On Saturday they travelled to Sharon where they were pitted against tier arch-rivals from Claremont. Claremont was suc- cessful in keeping their winning streak alive against us by winning 5-1. .Claremont's pitcher had us baffled with his knucklebails and his speed. Since this was a double-knockout ~ tournament, that meant that we had our 'backs against the wall" for the duration of the tournament. After waiting 4 hours, we were in- formed that we had to play a team from Bradford. Port overpowered Bradford, easily defeating them 19-1. Everyone had their confidence restored at the plate in this game, as the score indicatus. On Sunday we learned that we would have to play Aurora, who had previously beaten us in the last game of league play. But Port Perry had something to say about that, as they defeated them 4-1. Everyone played exceptionally well. That meant we had to play right Ontario issues 39% increase in The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has issued 50,996 antlerless deer validation tags for the 1986 hunting season ----, '39 per cent increase vver last year. Suc- cessful applicants of the draw will receive their tags in the mail by late September. The seven-year-old selective harvest program is designed to con- trol deer harvested by allocating a specific number of tags for _ antlerless deer ---- females and fawns -- in each management unit. "The large increase in the Gamblers are waiting The Greenbank Gamblers are still waiting for an opponent to be declared to meet them in the finals of the Oshawa City & District Camp- bell Division. Their opponents wili be either the Port Perry Legion or the Oshawa Merchants as Port Perry ousted Whitby in a 3 game series and the Merchants edged the Oshawa deer hunt tags number of validation tags we were able to locate this year is due to a healthy and increasing deer popula- tion -- a direct result of my ministry's selective harvest pro- gram combined with a number of mild winters," Ontario Natural Resources Minister, Vincent Kerrio said. This year, the Ministry received 73,736 applications -- an increase of nine per cent over 1985. Hunters who have questions about the selective deer harvest program should contat their local Natural Resources office. M.C.L. Juniors also in a 3 game set. Port Perry and Oshawa should declare a winner this week so the final series could get underway as early as this weekend and/or a game in Greenbank Park next Mon- day night. ; The Gamblers have been sitting idle for over three weeks waiting for this final series so their first job will (E2| Financing DERS Check it out at these two locations: Hwy. 7A, West of Port Perry Plaza 268 Queen Street, Port Perry - 985-8401 EJ CHEVROLE( OLDSMOBILE LTD after, against Claremont, who had been beaten. This was a totally dif- ferent Port team than Claremont expected, Port jumped right on Claremont's pitcher and easily defeated them 8-2. A great job done by all our players, especially, Brett Puckrin and Jason Cooper, Port's pitchers. We then had to play right away against the home team, East Gwillimbury. This proved to be a real nail biter, with Port forcing East Gwillimbury to play catch up ball all the time. I think that part way through the game it was whosever pitcher lost his control, the other team would win. One of East Gwillimbury's players did hit it over the fence, but that wasn't enough, as Port won, 17-15. That placed us in the final against Unionville, one of the leagues more powerful teams. Port lost most of their confidence at the plate due to the fast pitcher from Unionville. I think at this part of the day the tir- ing effects of the fourth game of the day was taking effect. However, Port fought hard but was unsuc- cessful in defeating Unionville. Unionville did eventually win 4-5. On behalf of the boys, I'd like to thank the never tiring fans from Port who braved the cold winds, rain, hot sun, and long hours over the summer to make this a suc- cessful year of softball. Without you it wouldn't have been possible. Also thanks to three men, Wayne McCully, Rob Cooper, and John Hopmans. These men spent a lot of their time teacl:ing us how to play organized softball. Finally, boys, you showed a lot of heart and character over the sum- mer. Especially the last weekend. be to get 'pumped' up again for the league finals. The Greenbank squad earned the right to finish in top spot on the last game of the regular season as they went head to head with the Oshawa Merchants with the winner assured of a first place finish. In this game Greenbanks Russ Korbak opposed Jim Chilvers on the Oshawa mound and everything pointed to a low scoring game. However Oshawa scored a pair of runs in the first inning and two more in the second to jump out to a quick 4-0 lead and added a fifth run in the top of the fifth inning. The 'never say die' Gamblers started coming back in their half of the fourth when Trevor Till and Don Beaton hit back to back singles and scored on Brian Tills long hit. In the fifth inning the Gamblers narrowed the score to 5-3 on Hugh Johnston's single. Trevor Till's dou- ble and Johnston scored from third on Brian Tills infield out. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning Greg Rodd led off with a base on balls and after one was out Rodd Real also got a walk from Chilvers. Dennis Romeril closed the score to 5-4 with a clean (two out) single and George Redshaw was the hero of the night as he scored Real and Romeril with the go ahead runs with a sharp single up the middle. Russ Korbak took over at this point and struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the Greenbank win and give them top spot in the final league standing. So its on to the league final with the Gamblers meeting either Port Perry Legion or the Oshawa Mer- chants. Should be quite a final series! You deserve a pat on the back for a job well done.
