MEADOWCREST NEWS Meadowcrest students and staff are getting into the swing of a brand new school year Staff and students at Meadowcrest School have settled in- to a busy fall term and many extra- curricular activities are now in place. The junior and intermediate choirs have been practising during the noon hours in preparation for a taping session to record our national anthem which will be used for open- ing exercises each morning. Practices have begun also for the junior presentation of 'Robin Hood" to be held in November. Many pupils have been involved in cross-country running and scocer games and tournaments. On Wednesday, October 8 Meadowcrest students had a very successful day at the Whitby-Ajax cross-country meet held at Dagmar Ski Club. Our 10 year old girls and 14 year old boys teams have qualified for the Durham Region finals on October 21. Keri Ferguson also qualified for the finals by finishing first in the 14 year old girls Viewpoint While there is no typical suicidal teenager, one thing is clear -- adolescent problems cannot be measured by adult ndards. Most adults have learned to cope with crises that may seem insurmountable to a ~ youngster. Divorce, family con- flicts, parental pressure to achieve, a move to a new city, or the breakup of a puppy-love romance can profoundly affect - a teenager. There are several myths link- ed with the subject of suicide. For example, that talking about the subject will give teenagers ideas. The opposite is true. The first step towards prevention is to bring suicide out into the open. Troubled kids often don't have the ability to look ahead and may regard suicide as a solution to their problems. By discussing their fears, they learn they have options they never imagined. Another myth is that these children always come from broken or outwardly troubled homes. In fact, statistics show they frequently come from in- tact homes, where deep-seated problems may be more difficult to detect. The child may even appear to adults to be excep- tionally well behaved, achiev- ing, normal. The most dangerous misconception is that a suicide threat need not be taken seriously. It is a mistake to see a teenager's depression as a device to get attention. Don't believe the addage that those who talk about suicide will never take their own lives. Parents should be alert and never ignore suicide threats. While we are on the subject of Do's and Don'ts, here are a few From page 17 to be passed on ... DO trust your instincts if you suspect your teenager is troubled or suicidal. DO communicate your concern for your youngster's well being. Listen to his or her problems and show support. DO talk open- ly. Ask direct questions about your child's intentions. Try to determine if he or she has a suicide plan (how, when, where), the more detailed the plan, the more serious the threat. DO get professional help from a school counsellor, minister or psychiatrist. DO remove any guns, potentially lethal medications, alcohol etc., from your home. DON'T assume your teenager isn't the "type" to commit suicide. DON'T leave him or her alone if you belive the risk of suicide is imminent. DON'T act shock- ed at what a teenager tells you. DON'T debate with your teenager whether suicide is right or wrong. This may make him or her feel more guilty and intensify the depression. It's a shame, but there is still 'a stigma attached to mental and emotional illness, and some peo- ple just wouldn't dream of tak- ing a family member to a psychiatrist. Does the saying "dumb shrink" ring a bell? This column most certainly won't bring back that poor young girl CHESTERFIELD SUITES - LOVE SEATS SECTIONALS - MATTRESSES A Large Selection McKEEN FURNITURE 524 Simcoe St. S.. Oshawa - 725-5181 who drove her car off the Whit- by Pier last week. I wish it would, but if it only drives home to one parent the seriousness of the situation facing us all today, it will have accomplished its goal. Don't EVER be afraid to seek help. And watch out for the following warning signs: -- Threatening to commit suicide ("I'd be better off dead') -- Previous suicide attempts -- Personality changes (unusual withdrawal, aggres- sion or moodiness) ~ -- Depression (observable symptoms include changes in appetite and sleep disturbances) -- A dramatic drop in school performance -- Themes of suicide, death, or depression in essays, artwork or music -- Making final arrangements (giving away prized possessions) Let's hope no one in this reading audience ever has to use this list, but it is there should you have to. Once again Meadowcrest School is making good use of our Brooklin Pablic Library and we are so grateful to Mrs. Valerie Garland and her staff for accommodating our classroom visits and helping out with special book requests. We are fortunate to have this facility so close. Architect has been hired for Lynde House Museum From page 16 and administer its operation once it is open to the public. '"'Once the administrative framework is established, other issues can be addressed in se- quence, such as the level of restora- tion of the structure considered in conjunction with applicable provin- cial grants, selection of the period for restoration, necessity of having a curator, developing museum statements of purpose and intent, development of restoration guidelines, preparation of drawings and contact documents, selection of contractors, and construction," said O'Neill. He did say he felt it would be premature to establish an ad- ministrative committee without first consulting with the Whitby Historical Society. He added staff feels very strongly that the Whitby Historical Society should become re- involved in the Lynde House project as soon as possible as they are con- sidered a valuable resource group who will give generously of their -time and knowledge to the project. It was suggested that until the Historical Society can be contacted, the operations committee continue to administer the project until such time as a permanent administrative committee can be organized.
