A resident of the area believes the source of contamination can be pin-pointed and steps taken to clear up this source, which would allow - residents to continue using the spring for drinking water. One resi- "dent of Portview Beach told the Star last week the spring has heen a source of drinking water for many years and some properties along the beach have access to the spring deeded on the property title. However, H.R. Robinson of the Health Unit told the Star the depart- \ment wants "public access to the { water closed off." Mr. Robson said the reason for the order was two tests of the water car- ried out last month. The first test Sept. 15th showed choloform levels of 44 parts per 100 ml water and fecal counts of eight parts. A'second test on Sept. 25th showed the choloform level at 24 parts, but there was no fecal count in this test. He said the results are not con- sidered particularly high, but any reading in drinking water is cause for concern. OFFICE FURNITURE Filing Cabinets Desks - Chairs - etc. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Mr. Robinson said the September tests are the first to show any pro- blem with the spring water there and he agreed that the contamina- tion could have resulted from run- off from the abnormal amount of rainfall last month. He said the Health Unit wants the water cut off because it does not have the manpower to monitor the water quality on a regular basis. According to one Portview Beach resident, the water comes from an artesian type spring at the top of the . hill to the east of the beach road and is piped down the hill to a tap. He said he has been drinking the water for the past 14 years without ill ef- fect. If further tests prove to show contamination, he'll boil the water for drinking. Policy review The Durham Board of Education plan to review its student excursion policies following the tragic death last week of a 16-year old Oshawa youth who died while on a school trip to the Warsaw Caves, north of Peterborough. Donald Miller, a grade 11 student at McLaughlin Collegiate died Oc- tober 8 when he slipped while ex- ploring a crevice. He grabbed the side of the rock face for support and a 700 pound slab of stone came free, crushing him. He was among 38 grade 11 and 12 science students making the trip to the Warsaw Caves area accom- panied by two teachers. The Warsaw Caves, owned by the Ottonabee Conservation Authority is a popular area for group excursions, attracting about 40 each year. The freak accident occurred in what has been described as a heavi- AUGUST 15 TO OCTOBER 11, 1986 ly wooded area, away from the marked trails. McLaughlin principal Bob Dockstader is quoted as saying students from the school have been touring the caves area for 18 years without serious incident. He also said the two teachers leading the tours did not to anything improper last week. A decision on whether an inquest into the tragic death should be call- ed is expected this week by the Cor- oner's department. Meanwhile, the Conservation Authority has closed the area to the public and is discussing whether the area should be permanently closed to individuals and excursions. The young student, Donald Miller, was described by friends and teachers as popular and well liked. His fellow students may create a memorial fund in his memory.
