(From page 1) Peleschak, our area was chosen because it is representative of most Canadian school systems. Not as big as a metropolitan system like - Toronto, it is nevertheless more ad- vanced than many smaller districts in the country. "We represent Canada to them," Mr. Peleschak added. The group was here to learn as much as it could about other school systems, and will take a great deal of information back to Japan. As expected, the visitors found many differences between the two countries. Osamu Kinoshita, a teacher from Yasnder Junior High School, discovered that "students in this school (Port Perry High) study much harder." He was also extremely surprised "at the way students dress, com- pared to the spartan uniforms PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 15, 1986 -- 3 Japan visitors hit it off sweater, white cowboy boots, make- up and dangly earrings. "Students never wear clothes like that!' he said with a huge grin. Miss Armour laughed too. "They kept thinking I was a teacher because of the way | ai dressed and how tall I am. They couldn't get over how tall some of the students are." Mr. Kinoshita was also over- whelmed by the beauty of the grounds at Port Perry High School. "I envy. the students here because they can study in a beautiful place," he said admiringly. In Japan, most schools are at least three storeys tall and are often up to five storeys. "Japan is small so we go up!" he said, again with a smile. In fact, there were smiles all around throughout the visit as local educators gladly rubbed elbows with their Japanese counterparts. "It's been interesting from both sides to see how many similarities there really are,"" Mr. Peleschak pointed out. : When the interview was over and the visitors began boarding a waiting bus, Mr. Kinoshita came "running back to say one more thing to the reporter from the Star. "I think it is important for me to say the lunches here are very nice. We heard that students here cook- ed the lunch," he said, still smiling. "We were very much surprised." 'Oh, and one more thing, make sure you say hi to all the students for me." So, to the students of Cornish and Port Perry High School, Osamu Kinoshita says "Hi!"' Port Perry High School council president Kristy Armour chats with a member of the Japanese delegation which toured the school, along with R.H. Cornish Public School last Friday. The visitors were thoroughly impressed with local students and couldn't get over how tall they are or how they dress. Japanese students wear with no jewellry, cosmetics or nail polish. He gestured laughingly to high school president Kristy Armour, wearing a bright orange skirt and ATTENTION!
