by Bruce Luke If you happen to be a snowmobiler and a member of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club, this is the time of the year you begin to have hopes of a cold winter with lots of snow. Before this happens, though, there is lots of work to be done preparing the 100 miles of trails that make up the system of the Port Perry Club. Trail Directors, Peter Booth, Bruce Stauffer and Bob Farmer have already spent many hours on the trails beginning in early fall. As well, other members of the club assist whenever they can find some free time on a Saturday or Sunday. This year has seen the addition of anothcr 400 feet of 'boardwalk' bringing the total of bridged-over swamps to approximately 1700 feet in total. This is no mean feat! The luniber and bridges don't just ap- pear out of nowwhere. First step is a co-operative lan- downer willing to allow us to cut some cedar trees. Of course the bush is usually miles from the nearest road which means the logs have to be hauled out, one by one us- ing the Argo ATV and lots of man- power. Then they must be trucked to a mill where they are cut into boards (more manpower) then reloaded unto trucks and trailers and hauled as close to the swamp as possible where they will be laid as boardwoak. Naturally, again loads of manpower is needed to help carry the lumber and load the Argo before these hundreds of feet of bridges become a reality. BOMBI With a membership of nearly 500 families using the trail system, not to mention the 'passing through" snowmobilers and the many weekend tourists, the Club found it necessary last year to look at bigger grooming equipment. Near the end of the season a Bombi was purchas- ed from another club in Eastern On- tario, and this too has made for a lit- tle more work on trails this fall. Since this equipment is larger, trails have had to be widened and made a bit higher in order to accom- modate the Bombi and its new ac- cessories. All those old stumps in the swamps and bushes that were no problem in the past, now had to be pulled and pushed aside to make wider trails. GOODWILL With 90 percent of our trails on RAREN E. Double staking across fields is usually there for a reason such as seeded land or fall wheat and riders are reminded to remain between the posts and not cut corners. The club trailmen will see that gates and fences will be opened when the time is right but until they put the 'OPEN' notice in the paper -- all trails will remain closed. Some farmers still have cattle on pasture and are still trying to finish their land work. Following a directive decided at the annual snowmobile convention last spring, a trail per- mit will be required to travel all trails around Ontario. Membership Hazel Coates tells us that the sale of permits and memberships is well above last year's tally at this time. Our next General Membership Meeting will be Dec. 9, 2 p.m. at the Clubhouse on Shirley Rd. and everyone is invited to attend. Who knows, maybe a jolly old fellow from the north may stop by if weather conditions are right. See you there and think snow! (Sorry about that statement all you sum- mer sunshine lovers.) PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 25, 1986 -- 13 Paul Lucyk (left) happily accepts a $1,000 bill from Bill Harper of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club. Paul was the lucky winner of - the club's recent draw. See story for details. Teenager wins $1,000 with a one dollar ticket Surprise was too mild a word to describe the way Paul Lucyk felt when he found out he was $1,000 richer. The 17 year old Prince Albert youth was awarded a thousand dollar bill after his name was drawn at the Port Perry Snowmobile Club annual dance held recently. Paul purchased the winning ticket for a whole dollar, only to please a friend, and didn't even attend the dance. It wasn't until the next day that he found out he was a winner, "I didn't believe it at first," he said. "I had no idea I might win." He's planning on buying a snowmobile of his own with his sud- den riches. Snowniobile Club vice-president Bill Harper made the presentation, and says the proceeds from the draw will pay for snowmobile trail grading equipment. Also, if there isn't sufficient | stion, exhaust gases may be prevented from rising up the chimney, and leak back into your home. This can occur when the fireplace, kitchen fan or other air exhausting appliances are operated in a home. If you're a homeowner, it's your responsi- bility to see that your furnace is properly maintained. A safe furnace makes your home a healthier place to be.
