Sports Eight straight wins make team 'the one to beat' in Junior League PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 25, 1986 -- 27 Those MoJacks keep sailing along by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks continue to sail along in the Central Junior C Hockey League with two more vic- tories over the weekend to run the string to eight straight wins. The MoJacks had little trouble in Lindsay Friday night as they whip- ped the Muskies 9-3 in a scrambly penalty-filled contest which at times threatened to turn into an all-out war. And back on home ice Sunday night, the MoJacks ran into the tough, hard skating Wellington Dukes. The outcome of this one was up for grabs until the third period when the MoJacks scored four un- answered goals to cement a 7-2 win. The two weekend victories give the MoJacks an even dozen so far this season in 14 starts and the team is on top in both the Crowley Divi- sion and the entire 12 team league standings. The game against the Dukes was a hard-hitting affair with the visitors taking an early 1-0 lead in the first period as Dale Juby scored while short-handed. Sean Bradley replied for the Mo- Jacks at 17:46 as he hit with a back- hand shot from the slot after Mike Watters had controlled a loose puck 'at the Dukes blue line. The MoJacks had an 18-5 edge in shots during the first period, but Dukes goalie Allan Bigg came up with some fine stops to keep the score kriotted at one each. In the second period, the MoJacks contirited to apply pressure, but it was the Dukes who scored as Brad Letini beat Brian Tarleton from the right side. That one-came at 7:17. But exactly one minute later, Mark McVety got the equalizer for the MoJacks off a scramble in front of the net. Linemates Andy Sutch and Chris Nicholson drew the assists on that goal. © At12:34, the MoJacks went ahead for good as defenseman Darren Nesbitt scooped up a loose puck at the side of the Dukes cage and calm- ly tucked it into the corner. Mike Watters drew the assist. The MoJacks ran into several penalties late in the period, but were able to keep the Dukes ¢ off the board thanks to some great work in the net by Tarleton who looked very sharp and in total control. As they have in several games in the past few weeks, the MoJacks saved the best for last and they simply took control of the contest in the third period. Rick Wilson broke the backs of the visitors at 5:06 when he carried the puck out of his own zone, stepped across the Dukes blue line and drill- ed a hard slap shot that beat the net- minder cleanly. That made it 4-2 and just before the mid-point in the period, hard- working John Hartford took a pass from Greg Warriner and scored through a crowd. Mark McVety, with his second of the game, made it 6-2 at 9:40, again with a shot from the slot through some heavy traffic. The final goal of the game came at 17:31 when Bob St. Jules took passes from Rick Wilson and Andy Sutch and he rifled a hard shot to the corner to give the MoJacks the 7-2 victory. This was an entertaining hockey game with plenty of hard hitting and good scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Brian Tarleton faced 28 shots in the Port Perry net and he had to be sharp on many of them. The MoJacks fired 49 shots at the Wellington cage. The MoJacks took nine minors and the Dukes were called for ten. It was a hard fought game, but at the final buzzer, players on both sides lined up to shake hands. This was not the case Friday night in Lindsay where ill feelings were evident on both sides in a choppy game that featured a lot of hacking and slashing. The game was just 26 seconds old when Rob Phinney gave the Mo- Jacks a 1-0 lead. The Muskies tied it four minutes later on a goal by An- drew Campbell. But MoJack sharp- shooter Mark McVety put the team ahead at 4:31 with assists from Nicholson and Sutch and they never gave the lead up after that. . Rob St. Jules made it 3-1 with an un-assisted marker late in the period while the MoJacks were kill- Port Atom B's refuse to quit On Sunday, November 23, Port Perry Atom II's sponsored by Pineridge Sports travelled to Millbrook for a game against the well disciplined, hard working, Millbrook crew. Millbrook started very strong, while Port showing signs of two weeks of inactivity and by the end of the period it was 4-1 Millbrook. The Port goal being scored by Jeff Card, unassisted. The second period was all Millbrook as they really stepped up the attack outshooting Port by a wide margin and outscoring them 4-0 for a 8-1 lead at periods end. Starting the last period the Pineridge boys began to play more aggressively and carry the play in the Millbrook zone. Although being outscored 2-1 in the period, the local boys closed the shot total and hemmed Millbrook in their zone throughout the period. Billy San- diford scored for Port Perry on a nice shot, with Todd Smart picking up the assist. The effort put forth by Port in the 3rd period after trailing so badly, showed there is no quit in these lads. Everyone connected with the team, coaches, players and a very large vocal cheering section are eagerly awaiting the return match in December. The next home game is Sunday, November 30 at 7 p.m. This game starts a very busy schedule for the Pineridge atoms as they will play six games and squeeze in a tourna- ment in the following two weeks. ing a penalty. The second period was all Port Perry's as Rob Baker scored and St. Jules added two more for a hat- trick. In the third, Chris Nicholson, An- dy Sutch and Greg Warriner found the range. Warriner's goal came while short-handed and was the result of sheer hard work on his part as he checked the puck away from a Lindsay defender. The MoJacks got less than a fair shake from the referee in this one, especially defenseman Jim Lewis. In the second period, he became in- volved in a scuffle with Andrew Campbell. They both got fighting majors and game misconducts, but to the surprise of everyone in the Darren Nesbitt (Number 2) of the MoJacks was in the right spot beside the Wellington Dukes net to scoop a second period goal during Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. Nesbitt's unassisted goal snapped a 2-2 building, Lewis was tagged with ag- gressor and instigator penalties. It was clearly the Lindsay player who should have been called for the ex- tra penalties. That blatant e ror cost Lewis a two game suspension. And late in the game, MoJacits Clay Dempsey appeared to be push- ed from behind into Lindsay goalie Phil Callaghan. That touched of a skirmish and when it was over, Dempsey was out of the game for fighting and also received a ques- tionable five minute cross-checking major. That cost him a two game suspension. There were well over 100 minutes in penalties, and it was the first game in several this season in which the MoJacks have been involved in The pipes are calling rugby players from PPHS Thirty rugby players from Port Perry High School will tour Scotland next March. Last June, rugby players from Berwickshire High School in Duns near Edinburgh visited Port Perry and spent 4 days being hosted by students at P.P.H.S. As they left, they invited the Port Perry students to visit them in return. During the past 3 months, rugby coaches John Rodway and Rob Didiomete, aided by Paul Arculus, have been working out the details for a two week tour of Scottish rugby oriented schools. Plans are now well underway for the tour. The Port Perry squad will visit schools at Troon, Dundee, Dunfermline, Galashiels and Duns. At each location the boys will be hosted by the students of the schools and stay with their families. Each stay will be 2 or 3 days in length. The boys will play one game against each school and as a highlight of their tour will attend an international match (game) bet- ween Scotland and Wales. In addi- tion, they will have an opportunity to visit some of the famous historical sights in Scotland: Burn's birthplace in Ayr, Edinburgh Cas- tle and Holyrood Palace among others. The cost of the tour will be borne by the students themselves, however, various fundraising ac- tivities will be undertaken to help to reduce the cost of the two week visit this kind of hockey. Paul Goreski handled the goal- tending chores for the MoJacks, fac- ing 26 shots. He was especially sharp while the Muskies enjoyed a man advantage. The MoJacks are idle until this coming Saturday night (November 29) when they will host the Lakefield Chiefs for the first time this season. The Chiefs, on top of the Don Ogden Division will be trying to snap the MoJacks eight game winning streak. Face off for this one is 8: 00 p.m There will be no MoJack home game on Sunday night, but on Mon- day, December 1, the team will travel to Cobourg to meet the Cougars for the first time this year. went on to defeat the Dukes 7-2. It was the eighth consecutive victory for the Port Perry squad, which leads all others in the Central loop with 24 points on 12 wins and just two defeats.
