¢ -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 16, 1986 etters Are sidewalks really necessary ? To The Editor: Recently | attended a council meeting with regards to the installa- tion of sidewalks on King Street (north side) preferably. The main concern for this is basically for the safety of our '"lit- tle people." There were several questions put forth by council members to Mrs. Banting and Mrs. Hamilton, principal of Greenbank Public School. Santa's challenge (From page 5) To Whom It May Concern: I Santa, challenge the people of Scugog Township, to match, double or triple the amount of my cheque (A Christmas Mystery). Please make this a Happy, - Healthy and Wealthy New Year. 'Santa' Check with Elizabeth Fulford at "Community Care 985-8461. How many would use this sidewalk? How often? Would more youngsters go home for lunch? Would the senior citizens of the com- munity use it too? Well maybe - but who will clean it for them? As far as children going home for lunch I have my personal doubts. The cost of installing the sidewalk will be unreal. So a sharp increase in taxes would certainly be indicated. , However, possibly there is another solution. What about filling 'n the ditches with sodding or asphalting or putting in a path of cinders - basically making it like a bicycle path. In that way when the Township or Highway Dept. are cleaning the roads - sanding, this could be cleaned and maintained at the same time and we would still keep that *'country feeling that now surrounds us." At this time I would like to point out that the west side of Highway 12 has sidewalks. From King Street down to Couves Lane - and I notice that in the winter people have great difficulty in walking in some areas because of the lack of sanding, shovelling, etc. However, one 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 TrusT US WITH YOUR CHRISTMAS 2nd SET of PRINTS FREE' Available on C-41 Rolls. One last comment. | have noticed from8:00a.m. to8:40a.m. and 3:25 to 4:15 the traffic on King Street East of Highway 12 is used by local residents and teachers going to and from the school along with school buses - and this is where the concern is, not from other citizens. Believe me, I am concerned for the safety of children, otherwise I wouldn't be a Crossing Guard but 1 think a greater concern and more thought needs to be given to the children and teenagers getting off the buses in the afternoon and cross- ing the highway. Yours truly, Eleanor Spick, Crossing Guard, Greenbank, Ont. Board wants. site (From page 1) before it goes to expropriation. "It could cost everybody a lot of money to expropriate,"' he said, but he added he doesn't think the Fair Board would fight the ex- propriation. He said he hopes Fair Board members would be inclinded to negotiate as the Fair could end up with nothing if the expropriation goes through. The move to start expropriation proceedings comes as a bit of a surprise as it was only four weeks ago that Mrs. Lafarga indicated the Board was not considering ex- propriation as an option. When asked why the change, she replied that the Board has reached the conslusion it has no other choice. - "There is just no other suitable site available for a school', she repeated. Chatterbox (From page 5) jewells sewn into the feathers. Yurovsky re-entered the room, followed by his men, all heavily armed. "Your relatives have tried to save you," he said. 'They have failed and we must now shoot you." "Nicholas was killed by the first bullet from Yurovsky's revolver and Alexandra a second later, before she could even make the sign of the cross. In the hail of lead that followed three of the Grand Duchesses died quickly, and so did the doctor and two of the servants. Poor Demidova sur- vived the first round and the men fell on her with bayonets. Then Alex groaned and opened his THE UNSUNG HEROES eyes. Yurovsky stepped forward and fired into his ear. Anastasia was only stunned and sat up screaming. Like Demidova, she met her death as half a dozen bayonets were driven into her body." Sorry, not very pleasant, | know. But after reading this ac- count and similar accounts, I don't see how the soldiers, brutal and vicious as they were, could have possibly allowed Anastasia to escape. Still, it is an interesting, con- suming story, and for once I must congratulate the TV networks for producing a mini-series that is historically important, rather than the trash that is usually churned out for audiences like us. for help; MR.
