a i Y a i ACRE el ns ran oh co ER yr sm by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks picked up the pieces Sunday night at the Scugog Arena and ground out a tough 7-5 win over the Little Britain Merchants. The yictory over the Merchants came on the heels of lop-sided 12-4 loss 'the MoJacks suffered December 30 a' the hands of the Bowmanville Eagles. Sunday night's game against Lit- tle Britain was brutal at times with players: from both teams taking numerous trips to the penalty box. Had the referee been calling all the fouls, the box would have been full the entire game. But the MoJacks will gladly take the two points to pad their lead in the Walter Crowley Division and to stay on top in the overall Central Junior C standings. After a couple of so-so periods, the . MoJacks came to life in the final frame with four straight goals to ce- ment the win. 3 Trailing 5-3 early in the third, Jim Lewis cut the margin to one when he . rapped a shot into the net off a scramble beside the Little Britain cage. Darrin Nesbitt and Sean Bradley drew the assists. Three minutes later, the MoJacks tied the game on a nice set up at the side of the net as Chris Nicholson converted passes from Mark McVe- ty and Brian Prakken. The winner came at 13:31 with the MoJacks enjoying a two man ad- vantage. Rob St. Jules took passes from Criag Menzies and Rick Wilson, and he put a couple of nifty moves on Merchant goalie Ron Stewart before carefully tucking the disc between his pads. Just 27 seconds later, Wilson played a big role in getting an in-- surance marker for the MoJacks as Tweens lose ht Merchant line and fed the puck to Bradley who was camped on Stewart's door step for a quick tap- in. The other Port Perry goals came from Mark McVety with two and captain Andy Sutch on a great in- dividual effort. He chased a loose puck deep in the Merchant zone and when netminder Stewart fanned on a clearing attempt, Sutch somehow wound up with the puck on his stick and guided it into the net while sprawled flat on the ice. The Mo- Jack captain also had assists on McVety's two goals. Brial Tarleton was in the nets for Port Perry and faced 36 shots. He was at his best mid-way through the final period when Little Britain pep- pered his cage with tough shots on a power play. For the Merchants, Jerry Kea had two goals while singles went to Brian Carpenter (on a penalty shot) Paul Young and Todd Farr. The Merchants were called for 16 minor penalties, while the Mojacks took 13. Andy Sutch and Gord Thompson both took: fighting and - game misconducts after a second period wrestling match at centre ice. After the final buzzer. the Mo- - Jacks Len Giacalone was punched three times in the head by Merchant defenseman Brian Beukeboom. Giacalone, who is just coming off a suspension, kept his cool and skated away. Beukeboom drew a double minor! - In Bowmanville on December 30, the MoJacks took their worst beating of the season as the Eagles trampled them 12-4. Any resemblance between the 'MoJacks 'that night and the team that had won 18 of the previous 24 games was just not to be found. The Eagles took full advantage of the small ice surface in the Bowmanville Arena to build a 4-0 On Saturday, the Allen Aluminum Tweens met Lindsay for what turn- ed out to be the first loss of the season. After a two week break the girls were a little rusty in their pass- ing and shooting skills and they had ~ : to work hard for every small break. At the end, of the first period the score was tied at 4 all. Lisa Levy scored all 4 goals for Port with 2 assists going to Nicole Slack and "singles to Christine Mueller and Sylvia Durward. During the second half of the game, Lindsay scored 6 goals tg" Port Perry's 4 bringing the final score to 10-8 in Lindsay's favour. An | unassisted goal by Nicole Slack opened the scoring in the second period and Lisa Levy scored the last three goals with one assist each go- ing to Nicole Slack and Lisa Toye. The next day, the Allen Aluminum Tweens were given a real work-out when they came up against their parents... They learned a lot about the finer points of ringette in this match and will be well prepared when they travel to Oakwood on Sunday at 4 p.m. ------------ TROPHIES & ENGRAVING Team Jackets & Uniforms) Skate Sharpening PINERIDGE SPORTS - SHOP Queen Street - Port Perry PHONE 985-2839 ead by the mid point of the first period. *'And for the first time in many games, the MoJacks goal-tending was shakey and the defense made several costly giveaways in their own zone which directly led to Eagle goals. Brian Tarleton started in the cage for the MoJacks and was replaced in the first period by Paul Goreski when the score was 3-0. Goreski didn't get much help from his 'mates as the Eagles took a 7-2 lead into the dressing room after the first period. Rick Wilson and Darrin Nesbitt scored for the MoJacks, with both goals coming while the Eagles were playing two men short. \ Midway through the second, Nesbitt scored again on a power Mark McVety (10) of the MoJacks had Lit: . tle Britain goalie Ron Stewart at his mercy on this play during Junior C action Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. McVety scored a couple of PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 6, 1987 -- 21 oJacks grind out a win over Merchants play with a hard shot from the blue line, and rounding out the scoring, Brian Prakken found the range late in the game For the Eagles, Rob Schlechter - did a lot of damage with three goals and Mark Hickey also had three The- MoJacks had been playing well up to this game and probably were due to come out flat. The Eagles took full advantage. Oddly enough, the final shots on goal tally showed the MoJacks out-shooting the Eagles 37-35. The difference was that many of the Port Perry shots were harmless, while the Lagles constaiitly worked into position for a quality scoring chance. But the deciding factor in this game was the play in the corners and along the boards. The Eagles won most of the "little battles' and converted several turn-overs into goals. These two teams will meet ggain at the Scugog Arena on Thursday, January 15 and obviously the Mo- Jacks will be seeking to atone for last week's match 'Phe game last week was a relatively tame affair 'with the referee keeping a lid on things with numerous minor penalties. Mike - Watters and Troy Foster tangled in a spirited wrestling match late in the game: hut this was the only Ohl: break of fighting. This coming week, the MoJacks will visit Lindsay on Friday night for a game against the Muskies and Sunday at the Scugog Arena, they will host the Cobourg C ougers with game time at 7:30 p.m. goals as the MoJacks put together a strong third period to come from behirid and defeat the Mer- chants 7-5. It was a chippy game with a lot of penalties on both sides. (See story for details). 3 DURHAM AUTOMOTIVE AUTO BODY REPAIR We will pay the first ~ $100.
