On Friday, Jan. 2nd the Sport sland Bantam Boys hockey 'team travelled to Baltimore to compete in their first tournament of the year After playing three excellent hockey games the boys came out as the "B" side champs. The first game of the tournament saw the Bantam squad taking on a tough team from Oakwood. It wasn't long until Oakwood had a 2-0 lead in the game but with 10 seconds left in the second period Lee Phillips scored and this made it for an in- _ teresting third period. At the 7:03 mark of the third, Lee Phillips came thru again and mark- ed an unassisted goal to tie the game. With the game looking like it might go into overtime the strong skating forward; Steve Trumbull, of Oakwood scored with 50 seconds left and that made it a loss for the Port Perry squad, with the final being B and L throws scare af broomball league leaders Goreski's Insulation 3 B & L Donuts 2 B&L gave Goreski's a bad scare in this affair as they built up a 2-0 lead prior to watching it evaporate into a loss. ° Brian Mikkeben did all the damage for B&L as he notched both goals with Graham Carl picking up the assist on the second marker. On Saturday, January 3rd, the Port Perry Petite C's played against the Mariposa team in Oakwood. The Mariposa team took the lead early in the game but the Port girls kept up the pressure and might have evéned the score except for two defensive lapses, one in each period. As a result of two quick goals by the strong Mariposa offense during each of these low points, Port Perry fell farther behind and ended he. By the end of the first it was 2-1 as Mark Lee got his first of two from Bart Wager. With 4:56 left to play in the game the same two clicked to make it a 2-2 score. With overtime looming, Lee set up Ken Fraser to give Goreski's the win. The league will be hosting its an- nual tournament this coming Satur- A strong effort game trailing by six goals, Three goals were scored by Valerie Payne, two by Amanda Webb and one by Jean Templeman. Brandy Harris had two assists, and Melissa Pereman, Katherine Ellis and Jean Templeman each assisted once. Emmerson's 0 Blackstock built a 2-0 lead by the 'midway point of the game on goals by Rick Bayard from Dave Dalton and Ron Wagg from Tom Wootten. The score stayed this way until late in the game when Ron Short chalked 'one up from Wayne McGuigan. With 28 seconds to play - Dalton rapped in Bayard's rebound for the final. All players played an extremely good game and it was Ed Toffan who had the hot hand in this one Toffan opened the scoring with two goals in the first period. One goal was unassisted and the other had assists going to Eric Grosvenor and Mike Griffin. With the game at 2-1 in the third period, Chris C arr scored from Lee Philips and Ed Tof- fan to put the boys ahead 3-1. Jarett Harman then scored to add more in- surance with assists going to Eric Grosvenor and Phil Teno. In this game the fine goaltending of Jamie Brown proved to be the effort need- ed to award him with the M.V.P. award for that game. This win now put the Sportsland team into the final game against the host team, Baltimore. The final game started with a very excited Port Perry squad and it didn't take the boys very long on getting onto the score board. Chris Carr started the scoring with the assist going to Lee Phillips Gerry Douma then notched in a goal from Todd Poppleton: Lee Phillips then - rounded out the scoring with an ex cellent goal with the assist going to Poppleton again. With Paul Kett playing a fine game. in net, it look- ed like he might receive a shut-out but it was not to be as Baltimore did get on the scoreboard. * At the final buzzer it was 3-1 in favour of Port Perry and they brought home the trophy. ~ Special honours go to Lee Phil Ips who had an excellent tournamen: as he had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead the team as well as he was awa d- ed the M.V.P. award in the first game against Oakwood and in the final game against Baltimore.
