The elephants are coming! Well, not ex- actly. But those of you who are old enough will remember the startling- ly innovative Busby Berkley Follies routine called 'Elephants On Broad- way' which featured, you guessed it, hordes of tap-tap-tapping dancers on the prance on Broadway. But you don't have to revisit the dirty 30's to see a similar sight. You don't even have to visit Broadway. Town Hall 1873 on February 7th is "importing" an electrifying new troupe, the National Tap Dance Company, to dazzle you on its own stage right here in Port Perry. - Founded in Toronto just ten years ago by William Orlowski of Bramp- ton, and Torontonian Stephan Dy- mond, both of whom have taught at York University, the Company has become one of Canada's most: dynamic arts organizations. Its pro- grammes feature the versatility, . originality, creativity and sheer entertainment value of dance. Their signature piece would attest to all that. Who else would have thought of setting J.S. Bach's Brandenberg Concerto No. 3 in C Major to tap! AND receive a standing ovation ~ from a capacity audience at Lincoln Center's Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. That takes im- agination and talent. In its tenth anniversary year, the Company will be presenting all new programming highlighting the most popular presentation styles of tap dancing. Four top choreographers, Brian MacDonald of Stratford - Festival fame. The Company unfolds in its varied numbers riot only the "bewitching . trickery of complicated dance steps; but also the history of the form as it has evolved from the days of the Irish and Lancashire clog-dancing to those of the illustrious Bill Bo- jangles and Fred Astaire," to quote Dierdre Kelly of the Globe and Mail. For their Port Perry engagement the Company will be performing a show entitled a Gala Mixed Pro- gramme, an innovative and eclec- 'tic evening. Highlights may include "The Conversation," a delightful telephone conversation depicting the ups and downs of a relationship through the unique rhythms of tap dancing, or, possibly, Grand Tarantelle, an ingenious combina- tion of ballet and tap. However, the high spot will be a very special Saturday afternoon Youth performance which will spell- bind in dance that old mystery thriller, with a twist, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
