His parents, Joel Claughton and Elizabeth Henry settled at Red Deer, Alberta, and later went to Didsbury, Alta. wheré Jim was born in 1919 and at 4 months of age, with sister, Helen and parents came to Ontario, where his brother Jack was born. B His father was employed at Myr- tle and Hampton and from there bought a farm at Reaboro from where Jim attended Lindsay High School. At this time his mother became confined to a wheelchair. In 1941, his father bought the Ward farm west of Utica where Jim resided for 45 years. The hore was noted for the "Welcome Mat" for the many visitors, especially for his mother. Jim did a regular weekly deed when he collected the Harper twins across the road and walked - them to Lakey's Store for their Saturday night treat. After his father's death in 1964, Jim took over the farm and cared for his invalid mother who could do limited household chores, and pass- ed away in 1969. Jim had a select herd of beef cattle and for some years had a poultry - egg business and delivery service to customers in Oshawa. He set up a unique "'self- serve" system for local customers where they picked up their eggs, wrote the number and amount in the book, put the money in the con- tainer, mage their change and sign- ed their names. This proved very successful. In the 1970's he reduced the work load by selling 50 acres at the south end, leaving him with 25 acres, with the well kept buildings.
