Durham Police, meanwhile, were . still writing up the reports from the Seagrave robbery when they were "interrupted by the employee from néarby BJ's Donuts in the plaza at the corner of Highway 74am Water Street. At approximately 4 a.m. Sherri Ann Goguen, 20, came running into the Port Perry police station describing an armed robbery where she worked. Again, the employee was alone in the shop when a white male of light build entered the store and asked for a coffee. Police say as she turned her back to get the coffee, the man followed her behind the counter, produced a silver blade knife with a black han- dle, approximately six inches long, and demanded money. According to police, he then fled the shop and ran across the street Chatterbox © (continued) Granted, we taxpayers pay for its use, and we pay heavily, but chances are, if Canada Post did close rural post offices, our taxes 'would not decrease. I'm willing to bet, if anything, our taxes would Still go up -- and we would have very little to show for it. Especially people in small towns. I can't stress enough how im- portant the rural post office is'to the people of a small community. Unless you've lived in a small town, it's hard to understand just how important it really is. Which is maybe why' the big ci- ty executives who run Canada Post wanted to close the rural post offices in the first place. To them, the rural post office is merely an expense that can easi- ly be replaced by the more economical super mail box. How can Ottawa possibly understand the social importance of a small "inefficient" post office -.to-the people of-a small-town? ------ Obviously, the only way they can understand is to tell them. And I think that is beginning to happen. Public pressure from 'these "small town people' from all over the country have pushed politi- cians like Michel Cote to re-think their initial haste in attempting to close rural post offices. It's going to take a heck of a lot | more pressure. however, before . Cote can make another announce- | ment, and this time, make it stick. 'Regional Police, they were planning 1 and disappeared. Goguen immediately went to the police station. Police took off in the same direction but were unable to 'locate the suspect. : Police are looking for a man described as having a fair complex- ion, hazel eyes, wavy collar-length hair, and a clean shaven face. At the time of robbery he was described as wearing a blue nylon sports jacket with fur collar, and blue jeans. Neither Lee nor Goguen were in- jured in the robberies. Friends meet by | accident | Margaret Steer and Gerald Gray were driving to meet each othe, but they never expected to meet head- on! ki The two are boyfriend and, girlfriend, and according to Durham on meeting the evening of January 27th. The 1986 Pony driven by Steer, 29, was headed northbound on Regional Road 2 turning onto old Simcoe St. The 1984 Ford truck, driven by, Gray, 33, was headed eastbound oft old Simcoe Street, approaching Regional Road 2. "Police say the roads were iced and the two cars collided head on, caus- ing approximately more than $6,000 total damage. Steer suffered minor injuries. and was taken to Port Perry's Community Memorial Hospital, treated and released. No charges were laid due to road conditions. Win ter bushes, the fir trees, the branches, the fallen logs. the fences are all covered with the white frosting and everything is white- and clean.
