'The Port Perry Snowarama went "over the top' on Sunday to meet the 1987 target of $20,000 in pledges for the Easter Seal Society and its work with disabléd children. The $20,000 from this year's ride puts the total raised in a decade at the Port Perry Snowarama at over $200,000. That's quite an ac- - complishment for this area, con: sidering that one year, the ride had to be scrubbed completely due to bad weather (lack of snow) and just «$1800 was raised that year. On Sunday, 154 snowmobilers left the Latcham Centre to cover the 60 mile course. Most were back in before the heavy snows hit the area in the early afternoon and the last of the riders was finished the course by about 2:30 P.M The final tally on pledges is not ~ available at this time, but Tom Rad- ford said Monday morning, the xe Ba figure will be at least $20,500. Mr Radford is a member of Port Perry Rotary Club and served as the Club's chairman for the Snowarama event this year. "We're very pleased with the results. It was a good effort by all the. groups involved--the snowmobile clubs, the Trans Canada Radio- Club and the snowmobilers themselves,' he stated. This year for the first time, cross country ski enthusiasts took part in the Snowarama at Trillium Valley. Unfortunately, there were just two entrants (they raised over $500 in pledges) and Mr. Radford said next year, this aspect of the event will be more heavily promoted in an effort to attract more cross country skiers to take part. As she has the last four years, Marion Lee of Port Perry had the highest total in pledges of all the . snowmobile riders. Marion had $1432 in pledges, and over the past four years, she has raised just over $4500 for this worthy cause. Marion told the Star she'll be back again for Snowarama '88 and she'll « be working hard to increase the number of pledges. Members, of the Port Perry Snowmobile Club were responsible for grooming .the trail, and there were nine members of the Trans Canada Radio Club providing com- munications between three check- points on the trail and the home base at the Latcham Centre. Murray Holder of Cannington was the first rider to return to the Lat- cham Centre, something he has done for the last three years. Proceeds from the Snowaramas in Ontario are turned over to the Easter Seal Society for the work it does assisting disabled children.
