EV tur wer ARAN : : i | i i i i 1 Port Parry Star ¥ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tues., February 10, 1987 -- 25 Two weekend ties give team first place in Crowley Division 'MolJacks open playoffs with Lindsay by John B. McClelland ~ Mother Nature threw a solid body check at the Port Perry MoJacks Sunday night as a severe snow storm forced cancellation of the first game of the Central Junior C playoffs at the Scugog Arena against the Lindsay Muskies. The two teams will open the playoffs in Port Perry this Thursday Darren Nesbitt important goal evening (Feb. 12) with face-off at 8:30 p.m. The series will continue Friday night in Lindsay and then return to the Scugog Arena Sunday evening (Feb. 15) for a 7:30 start. The MoJacks won the right to face Lindsay in the opening round after finishing in first place in the Walter Crowley Division, thanks to a pair of ties in the final games of the Brian Tarleton strong in net Sportsland Jrs. On Thursday, February 5, the Port Perry Sportsland Juniors celebrated ringette week by playing an exhibition game against a team of teachers from R.H. Cornish. Both teams seemed restless prior to the game especially the Sport- sland girls as the thought of giving the teachers a thrashing crossed many minds. Sportsland did come out on top at the final buzzer by the score of 4-2. This was a very entertaining game both for the players and spectators as there were many end te end rushes. The Sportsland team as well as their coaches would like to thank the teachers for participating in the game. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. On Sunday February 8 the juniors % St. Patrick's Day Dance defeat teachers returned to league play by hosting the squad from Ajax. This game saw Ajax take control right from the start as they went ahead 2-0 before the game was one minute old and finished the period with a 4-0 lead. The Port girls came alive in the final frame and scored 3 unanswered goals but Ajax regain- ed their composure and finished the game strong making the final 8-4 in their favour. Scoring for Port were Mithelle Beare 1 goal, 1 assist, Colleen Yorke 1 goal, 1 assist, Kelly Calloway 1 goal, Sherry Harris 1 goal with single assists going to Cindy Harris and Kim Caudle. Port's next game is on Tuesday, February 10 at 8 p.m. when they pay 'a return visit to play Ajax at the Pickering Village arena. The team went into Uxbridge Fri- day night and skated the red-hot Bruins to a 3-3 stand-off, and then Saturday night in Little Britain, the MoJacks and Merchants battled to a 4-4 draw. But the two points were enough for the MoJacks to gain first place overall in the Division. Actually, the MoJacks wound up in a dead-lock with the Bruins at 47 points each. But the MoJacks earn first place on the strength of more wins than the Bruins and a better won-lost record against Uxbridge during regular league play. On Friday night in Uxbridge, the MoJacks got off to a slow start and spotted the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Kevin Smith and Todd Laroche. Rick Wilson got the MoJacks on the board in the second with a power play effort and then Chris Nicholson clicked for the MoJacks second - goal. The Bruins went ahead 3-2 ~ after 40-minutes when Stu Holter scored, and that's the way it stayed _ until the final minute of the game. 'With just 56 seconds left, Darren + Nesbitt tied the score at 3-3 with assists to Dave Sims and Chris Nicholson, and that goal kept the MoJacks in the race for first place. The next night in Little Britain, the MoJacks did what they had to do = -- come up with at least/a single point. They tied the Merchants 4-4. Rob Baker, up from the Port Midgets for this game, turned in a strong performance with a pair of goals while singles came from Mike Watters and John Hartford, who also had two assists. The Merchants rallied for two goals in the third period, with the ty- ing marker coming off the stick of Brian Carpenter with just over one minute left in the game. Paul Young, Jerry Kea and Martin Drake were the other marksmen for the Merchants. In the other Crowley Division playoff series, the Merchants will tangle with Uxbridge Bruins in a best of seven affair. The Ajax Axemen finished in first place overall in the Central Junior C League with 49 points, one better than Bowmanville Eagles. The Axemen will meet Cobourg in the first round of playoffs while the Eagles will battle it out with the Port Hope Panthers. In the Don Ogden Division, Lakefield Chiefs finished first and will meet the Brighton Bruins, while Wellington Dukes will face the Madoc Hurricanes. MOJACKS VS. LINDSAY During the regular schedule, the MoJacks and the Muskies faced each other six times with the Mo- Jacks winning four and losing twice. The MoJacks out-scored the Muskies 37 to 27 in those six games, but the up-coming series is exp: to be a tough one as five of ed by two goals or less. The Muskies appeared to lack consistency throughout the regular schedule, running hot one game and cold the next, and they were prone to taking a lot of penalties. SIX... : regular season games were decid- Chris Nicholson dangerous sniper The forced cancellation of Sunday night's opening playoff game pro- bably was a blessing for the Mo- Jacks who have a couple of players on the limp, and the team was tired after two very tough games against Uxbridge and Little Britain. Brian Tarleton played an outstan- ding game in goal for the MoJacks- against the Bruins, facing 38 shots and he'll likely get the start in goal for the playoffs. The MoJacks enjoyed a successful regular season finishing with a record of 22 wins, three ties and nine defeats. The team struggled somewhat just after Christmas, but finished strong with two wins, two - "ties and one loss in the last five games. Greg Warriner kills penalties In 341 egular games, the MoJacks scored 229 goals, while yeilding just 142, the second best goals-against record in the Central Junior C League behind Ajax. But the new season begins for the MoJacks on Thursday night at the Scugog Arena (8:30 PM) in game one of the playoffs against Lindsay. This is a best of seven affair with the winner meeting the survivor from the Uxbridge-Little Britain tiff for the Divisional championship. The champions from the three divisions will play a home and home round robin series, with the two . teams with the most points then playing a best of seven series to decide the Central League championship Pee Wees defeated by Huntsville team The Pee Wee A Legionnaires held their first playoff game against Huntsville on Friday, February 6 at the Scugog Arena and came up on the losing side of a 4-3 score. With Shawn Larocque playing in net, Port Perry came out flying scoring on a power-play goal by Brett Puckrin assisted by Jason Cochrane and Jan Heyes. The op- position tied it up in the last. minutes of the period. The second period began with Huntsville scoring first, but the Legionnaires tied it up on Brett's se- cond goal of the evening assisted by Jan. After the visitors fired one in the net in the first minute of the third period, the Port Perry boys made a comeback on a goal by Jan Heyes from Jason Cochrane and Chris ~ Forder. But Huntsville kept the pressure on when they scored less than a minute later to win the game. The Legion team travelled to Port Hope Saturday for a tournament. After losing the first game in over- time to Ancaster 5-4, the Port Perry boys advanced to the consolation round to face a tight-checking team from Colborne. The teams were tied 2-2 in the third period but with 2 'minutes remaining in the game, Col- borne fired in the go-ahead goal which proved to be the game win- ner. With 26 seconds remaining, Col- borne also scored in the empty net to defeat the Legionnaires 4-2. Brian Madill played goal for Port Perry, while the goal scorers in the tournament were Brett Puckrin (2), Jason Cochrane, Ken Winslow and Steve Staniland with singles. Assists were earned by Jan Heyes (3), Jason Cochrane (2), Dan Sluggett, Jeff Parry, and Steve Laird. Jason Towns won the M.V.P. award for both games. Congratulations, Jay! The Port Perry Legion team travels to Huntsville this weekend for the second and third games in the series. Good luck boys.
