February 17, 1987 -- 35 Plan to attend the Heart dance Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Our community was saddened with the passing of Bob Holliday this past week after a lengthy illness. Sympathy is extended to his wife Shirley, daughters Sharon and her husband Jim Moffatt, and Shelley - to Bob's parents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Holliday of Columbus and his many other relatives and friends. The Funeral service was held on Friday from Wagg Funeral Chapel. Roy Turner underwent heart surgery in Oshawa Hospital last week and is showing good progress. Ernie Swain has had health pro- blems and has spent some time in Bowmanville Hospital. Better health is wished for both of these men. On Sun. evening a delightful travelogue was given by Grace and Harold Hall to a large, appreciative audience in the United Church CE. Room. This slide presentation show- "ed their recent trip to Russia and other countries behind the Iron Cur- "tain. This was another event in con- nection with the Centennial Renova- tion of the United Church. On Sat. evenings of Feb. there is an ongoing "Guess Who's Corning For Din- ner?' taking p lace. System and other renovation items will take place at the regular service on Sun. morning, Feb. 22. Gord and Debbie Bryans, Patti "and Rick Alpe and Nancy and Bob Bryans along with about 50 friends | and relatives held a retirement par- ty for Bob's sister-in-law Orlee Bryans of Fenelon Falls. Orlee had nursed for forty-one years, most of it at Ross Memorial Hospital in the Obstetrics Department. On Thurs. evening there was a large turnout for the first meeting of 'the Blackstock Surviving With Style 4-H Club. Mr. Ron Hoskin, a local car dealer and mechanic, was kind enough, to tell us what we _ should and should not do to keep our vehicles running smoothly and look- ing good. Following his presentation we split into two clubs and elected the following officers for the Blackstock II Club: President- Ken Wilson; Vice-president- Nancy Green; Secretary- Roxanne Larmer; Reporter- Deanna Jacob. The next meeting is Feb. 19th at 7 p.m. at the United Church. Please bring a friend and a name for the club. Eleven members of the morning unit of the UCW and two visitors met at Norma Van cane for our Feb. An excitingweek (From page 11) lunch committee served a lovely lunch with the Valentine theme. This year the United Church Women are celebrating the 25th An- niversary of its formation into the one group from the former Women's Association and the Women's Mis- sionary Society. Church women have been meeting in Prince Albert since chur- ches were first established here in the 1800's but our earliest written records are dated in 1916 and report the formation of the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist Church in Prince Albert. The purpose of this Society was, and I quote, "To assist in every department of the church work that may commend itself to the judge- ment of its membership, such as the visitation of the sick, the stranger meeting. Blair Martyn gave an in- teresting talk on the work of the Lions Club and mentioned that they are having Wintario in Blackstock in March. Norma gave the worship with her theme "'The Winning Power of Love.' Because of the Presbyterial on March 10, our next meeting will be March 3. Ruby Van Camp presented an ex- cellent program with 'Love' the theme. The meeting closed with the Benediction. On Sat. evening, Roy and Edith McLaughlin hosted a McLaughlin family get-together. Those in atten- dance were Ted and Mary McLaughlin, Fenelon Falls; Ross and Jean Ashton, Haydon; Harold Wright, Oshawa and Harold and Eileen McLaughlin of Blackstock. The weekly Senior Citizen's card party was held on Tues. with eight tables. The results were: 1. Gladys Slack; 2. Clarence Masters; 3. Stanley Wright; 4. Richard Manns; 5. James Emerton; 6. Georgina McLaughlin. Belle Werry was low. The draws were won by: Harold Burgess, Ethel Goble and Anne Taylor. Cartwright Senior Citizen's Club News The Cartwright Senior Citizen's "Club have applied for a grant from the New Horizons to get some necessary items such as a refrigerator, ceiling fan, coffee maker, etc. for the Township Hall. The Club also needs some new members so there can be more social events and activities. Please help us by joining our club. 'Mrs. Ella Venning, P.R.O. Happy Birthday greeting to Mrs. 'Kathleen Watts who celebrated her 65th birthday last Tuesday. Kathleen and Albert Watts were guests of her aunt and uncle Bertha and Harry McLaughlin on Monday for birthday celebrations and on Tuesday were guests of her brother Anson and Irene Taylor at a restaurant in the Whitby Plaza. On 'Sat. Harvey and Joan Gralram, Mark and Rob hosted a Graham family gathering. Guests were Tom and Lois Feltis, Chryl, Peter and Randy, Jim and Ellen Graham, Heather, Robbie and Sarah, all of Dalrymple, Gerald and Jovce Kelly, Elizabeth and Elaine. Many of the local University and College students are home for "Reading Week.' break, folks -- we really don't ex- pect you will be reading all of the time! The annual Heart Dance will be held on Fri. Feb. 20th this year at the Recreation Centre. In the Senior Floor Hockey game, the Bruins defeated the Canadiens 7 to 5. Scoring for the Bruins were: Jason Cliff; Mike Leach, Martin Stubbs, Mike Hepburn and Peter Simms with Chris Chorostecki (3), Kendall Chorostecki and Brendon Agnew scoring for the Canadiens. The Flyers defeated the North Stars with 5-4 with Tommy Waters soring 4 and Terra Curle 1 for the Flyers and Ronnie Kelly, Dillon Weber, Ryan Peters and Brenda Tromans scoring for the North Stars. Gerald and Joyce Kelly and Esther were Fri. evening dinners guests of Victor and Ruby Parsons and Lynda of Colborne. Esther: stayed for the weekend with Lynda. On Tues. Feb. 10 the Afternoon Unit of the UCW met at the home of Aileen Byers with 12 members pre- sent. Following tea and a delicious angel food dessert, the meeting was opened by leader Grace Hall giving an explanation of the UCW logo. Roll Call was answered with a show- ing of old Valentines or telling some old Valentine verses. Guest speaker Blair Martyn was introduced and gave a very in- teresting and informative talk about the Lions Club, the meaning of the guest and their colours and how the Club operates. Minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted and a short business session followed. The group was encouraged to write two letters each to the government op- posing Bill C-22 proposing changes to Canada's drug patent law hy which generic drugs which are much cheaper would be no longer readily available. One letter was to go to the Prime Minister and the other to the Minister of Corporate Affairs. The Worship given by Marion Larmer was on the 'Bent Over Woman' Luke 13, verses 10-16. Offering was taken and the meeting closed with prayer. Cartwright Coparents Advisory Committee (From page 6) "sometime in the future and you can call the school if you would like to help. A group from the Parent's Com- mittee will be on the agenda for the next council meeting. Monday the 16th to present the proposal of sidewalks and a crosswalk for the dangerous Becker's corner in Blackstock. This meeting was rescheduled from the 26th of January. Wintario will be coming to Cart- wright Central on the 26th of March courtesy of the Lions' Club and they are looking for photographs of local people and places for the show.
