February 24, 1937 Construction all around at sod turning There were a lot of happy faces on the site of the Borelia Co-operative non-profit housing project last Saturday as the sod was officially turned. Although the site, on 7A highway near Port Perry Plaza was almost * | unapproachable because of mud. it did not deter about 106 people from coming Lo see this project finally get off the ground Among those present for the brief on-site ceremony were Mayor Jerry Taylor, Allan Lawrence, MP. Durham-Northumberland, Gary Herrema, Durham Regional chair- man, Heather Burke, representing the Ministry of Housing and Peggy Ridgway, president of the Borelia Co-op. After a few opening remarks, Mrs. Ridgway asked Mr. Lawrence and Heather Burke to do the official honours and turn the sod. Returning to the Latcham Centre, to get out of the mud, those atten- ding were treated to wine and cheese while greetings were brought from various levels of government responsible for the project. Ontario LOB INO many problems were overcome since the project started to get to where it is today. "It is an excellent site in the downtown core and we look forward ta the official opening of the complex,' he said. Allan Lawrence also eluded to the problems in the early years getting approval from CMHC to build the co-operative as they considered Port Perry to be the same district . as Oshawa. But he also gave them credit saying "once we were final- ly able to convince them of the need in Port Perry they gave their full support to the project."' He also gave a vote of appreciation of all those on the Board of the Co- operative for the dedication to the project although they went through many frustrations in the beginning. The Co-operative project will con- sist of 52 townhouses and eighteen apartment units. The townhouses will be two and three bedrooms while the apartments will consist of one. and two bedroom units. Construction on the site is now well underway and it is expected that many of the units will be oc- cupied this summer. Under bright sunny skies Saturday, members of the Co-op, politicians and other interested parties gathered to see the pro- ject officially started. Following the sod-turning, greetings were made at the Latcham Centre by Mayor Taylor, Allan Lawrence M.P., and other officials who took part in the opening ceremony.
