That meant landed immigra- tion and citizenship status was automatically on the way. And to hell with the many thousands of people who respected our immigration system and applied from abroad for admission -- either as an im- migrant or a refugee. Unfortunately, too many of these law-abiding applicants have been passed over for the liars -- who often paid large fees to "consultants" and 'tourist agents' for advice on how to beat our System. Last summer, the government annougced it was going to 'speed up' the processing program. At that time there were about 25,000 persons in Canada who had claimed refugee status upon arrival and were waiting to be prc cessed. But under this 'speed-up,' about 92 percent of them are.being accepted as legitimate refugees, and this is despite the fact that Bouchard admits most of them are phonies. All that is required is to swear an oath that one-is a refugee. Does common sense not dictate that if a person lies and cheats to get into the country initially, they will not let their conscience bother them to lie while taking an oath? It will be interesting to see if Mulroney can sand up to the bar- rage of bleeding-heart Liberals and clergy that is bound to come in "the aftermath of any crackdown. In pursuit of their political goals, most of them appear not to care that the chaos and anarchy rampant in Canada's immigration system was a threat to the country's future. If comments made by an immigration officer, and recounted in a major Canadian newspaper, are to be believed, for years now, the system has been making it tougher on immigrant applicants from such traditional areas as the British Isles, while making special offers to lure people from such: areas as Hong Kong. "Skilled young adults from Britain are often turned down while we okay Chinese from Hong Kong to come here if they have a big bag of money. to take along," the officer was reported as stating. It is true the under-mining of Canada's traditional immigration system is not something that happened overnight.-it began under the Libérals in 1965 and was speeded up during the reign of Pierre Trudeau. Mulroney was expected to tighten things up when he came to power in 1984, but didn't. Friday's action, especially the new vica requirements, are a very late start. But at least it is a start. Perhaps a law put on the books requiring all immigrants to put a five year stint in developing Canada's north might give some gate crashers a thing to think about.
