28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 3, 1987 Sudden-death overtime goal gives Uxbridge Bruins 1-0 lead The series got underway last Wednesday evening in Port Perry and it took nearly 71 minutes of hockey before the Bruins won it 3-2 in the second overtime period. The score was tied 2-2 after régulation play and remained tied after a ten minute straight time period. Then, just 55 seconds into * sudden death, forward Paul Butter- worth re-directed a shot from the blue line to give the Bruins the victory. The MoJacks never had the lead through this exciting game as Bruin netminder Joe Risk came up with an outstanding performance facing 57 shots. Time and again he foiled Mo- Jack scoring chances and he was especially sharp with the. glove hand, making a couple of big stops in the second period on hard wrist shots from captain Andy Sutch. At the other end of the rink, Paul Goreski also turned in a fine game between the pipes. He wasn't as busy as Risk (facing 30 shots) but he made some brilliant saves as the Bruins seemed to get their chances in flurries. ' ' 'The Bruins opened the scoring on , a power play at 14:47. of the first period when defenseman Rob Nicholson (a former MoJack the two previous seasons) slipped into the slot and converted a pass from behind the net. Darren Nesbitt got the MoJacks on the board at 7:27 of the second. blue line and then snapped a low shot past Risk from about 25 feet out. The Bruins again took the lead early in the third on a screened deflection credited to Kevin Smith. The MoJacks applied strong pressure around the Bruin net and it paid off at 12:30 when Chris Nicholson was set up by Nesbitt and Rick Wilson. He fired a shot along the ice to the stick side which beat Risk cleanly. That set the stage for overtime and both teams had some great chanees on the power play: The Mo- Jacks were not effective when they had the man advantage in marked contrast to the Lindsay series when they scored 15 times in four games. Although the final outcome of the game was disappointing for the Mo- Jacks and their supporters, this was a highly entertaining playoff game: hard hitting, tough with lots of scor- ing chances at both ends of the rink and only a handful of minor penalties. ) Crucial game (From page 25) played it wide open and loose. The result was 14 goals and an 8-6 win for the Bruins. : The MoJacks never owned a lead in this game. Three times, they managed to come from behind to tie the score before the Bruins Chris Brown beat Tarleton at 16:39 of the third. With 32 seconds left, Kevin "Smith guided a puck into the empty MoJack cage to end the game with the Bruins out front 8-6. For the Bruins, a couple of ex- MoJacks had hot scoring hands as Rob Nicholson hit for a hat trick, in- cluding a short-handed marker, and Paul Butterworth chipped in with a pair. PORT PERRY 985-9009 The MoJacks got a superb effort from Rob Baker, up from the Port Midgets for this game. He scored twice, added three assists and generally played a hard-nosed brand of hockey. Darren Nesbitt, who logged aot of ice time, had two - goals and singles came from Sutch and Rick Wilson, who also saw a lot of action along the blue line. He helped out with three assists. While they managed to get six goals by Joe Risk, the Mojacks never seemed to get all eight cylinders firing. On numerous occa- sions with good scoring chances, they shot the puck right at Risk's strength: his very quick catching hand. He picked shots out of the air with ease. Close Series Most observers picked this series to be a close one and so far they are right. All three games were up for grabs, although Port Perry had a wide territorial advantage in game one. The MoJacks are hurting with Craig Menzies out for the season with a hroken collar bone suffered in the Lindsay series. Brian Prak- ken, the team's fine checker and penalty killer is gone with shoulder problems suffered in game two, while Sean Bradley is doubtful with a twisted knee, also suffered in game two. The Bruins Chip Ander-: son, a hard rock blue liner is out with a broken wrist suffered in the ~ opening game. Several other MoJacks are play- ing in pain with less serious injuries. Game four is set for this Tuesday night (March 3) in Uxbridge at 8:30 P.M. and game five is back in Port Perry on Thursday night. also at 8:30 P.M. ; Remaining games, if thev are necessary, will go Friday night in Uxbridge at 8:30 P.M. and Sunday night (March 8) at the: Scugog Arena.
