tt I Eady te A Ns HH YMCA March break activity The Durham Region Family YM- CA has planned a variety of new ac- tivites for the March Break. . The fun begins on Mon. March 16 when all school-age children are in- vited to CARTOON CHARACTER' DAY. Beginning at 1 p.m., we will be playing games, watching movies and doing crafts all related to car- toon characters. On Tues. March 17, we have planned an afternoon at the Nor- thwood Equestrian Centre in Seagrave. The children will enjoy an hour's riding lesson followed by an hour of practical horsemanship. The afternoon will be completed with games, snacks and seasonal ac- tivities. We need a minimum of 10 children for this program to operate. -" An afternoon of physical exercise and low-key competition is slated for Wed. as our MINI-OLYMPICS in the PARK are featured. Races, games, scavenger hunt and frisbee throw are to be part of the fun. On Thurs. afternoon, it's off to the Sugar Bush at Purple Woods Con- servation Area to watch maple syrup being made and to go hiking. The week will conclude with an all-day trip to the Nonquon Outdoor Education Centre. In conjunction with the Whitby YMCA we will be hiking or snowshoeing (weather: permitting), playing outdoor games, eating lunch from an open 'campfire, and enjoying our last day of Spring Break. Parents are invited tc accompany their children on any trips and will be required to only pay aamission charges. The activities (all but Fri- day) begin at 1 p.m. and run until 4« p.m. although extended hours are possible. The cost is $7 half-day, although horseback riding is $15 per child. Help for weed addicts There's still time to register for the Lung Association's stop- smoking program, "Countdown." This seven session course will begin ~_at7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. March 24th #at the Community Memorial Hospital. 451 Paxton Street, Port Perry. A $75 registration fee is payable in advance and covers all costs, in- cluding permanently bound Course Reference materials, counselling at sessions, Maintenance Manual and a relaxation tape. The Lung Association has tested Countdown extensively over a five year period. and records an average - 82.per cent success rate among par- ticipants. This is.attributed equally to the support of group members and to the direction and encourage- ment of trained Lung Association Course Leaders. Over five weeks, participants will be taught to iden- tify smoking triggers, and how to apply coping tecliniques and alter- nate behaviours.
