Vol. 121 No. 16 Tuesday, March 17, 1987 Copy 35° 44 Pages Residents an garbage truck depot A The residents of Manchester are upset and angry that a commercial property in the heart of the hamlet may be used as a depot for the storage of garbage trucks. A delegation of about 20 residents of the community asked Scugog Township council Monday afternoon if there is anything the municipali- cana io paul De peing sale the property to Brown's Sanita- fon. the company which is under contract to Scugog for garbage col- lection in Wards Two, Three and Four. * "We are not very pleased to learn that there may be garbage trucks parked in our area," said delegation spokesman Ian Taylor Monday evening as he presented a 40-name petition to the council, representing nearly all the "homeowners in Manchester. Can Scugog beat the challenge? Can you spare 15 minutes of your time on May 27? If so, plan to take part in the Scugog Fitness Challenge. Details of the Challenge were unveiled at a media conference held Mr. Taylor said the residents of 'the hamlet are concerned about the pending move for several reasons including the possibility of odours, flies, disinfectants for cleaning the trucks and a reduction in the value' "of the residential properties around the site. The property that Brown's Sanita- tion is negotiating to purchase for a - truck depot is the former Scugog Works Garage. This property was sold by Scugog Township several years for use as an electrical shop - and is now being used as an auto "repair and paint garage. : While members of council listen- ed with sympathy to the concerns raised by the Manchester residents, Mayor Jerry Taylor said there may not be anything the municipality can "do about the issue. The property is zoned commercial last week at Community Memorial Hospital attended by about 50 local people, Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor, and the spirit of Scugog's friendly Phantom. The Fitness Challenge is an idea [ ry over C-4 which does not prohibit its use as a depot for parking trucks. "Our (council) hands may be tied on this issue," said the Mayor. However, Mayor Taylor promis- ed the residents that the municipali- ty would get in touch with Edgar Brown to find out if there is any way the pending sale can be halted. "I don't want to give you any guarantees," Mayor Taylor told the . delegation, "but I will get in touch with. Mr. Brown." Several members of the audience told councillors Monday evening that when the property in question was re-zoned to C-4 six years ago, they were under the impression the re-zoning would permit a "clean, quiet business' 'on the property. . Brown's Sanitation currently has (Turn to page 28) developed by Participaction to get as many people as possible involv- ed in a healthiet and more active life-style. At the information meeting last (Turn to page 10) Five acre site needed Board requires | a larger home The Durham Board of Education is looking for a larger home. The Board last week set up a__ search committee to begin looking" for a new five acre site for construc- tion of a headquarters building of some 90,000 square feet to replace the current facilities on Rossland Road in Oshawa. With the rapid growth in educa- tion in Durham Region over the last several years, the current building is now too small, and the' Board has been forced to rent administrative office space elsewhere. The current headquarters » building was constructed in 1960 for the Oshawa Board of Education. The Building Steering Committee, chaired by Oshawa trustee Cathy O'Flynn, has sent proposal letters to the seven municipalities under the Board's jurisdiction asking for assistance in finding the suitable five acre site for a new building. The Committee hopes to have the site by June 1 and final recommen- dations on the site, the size, the cost and financing of the new building will be given to the Board of Trustees by October 1 of this year a
