" 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 17, 1987 Country Corner has new corner Country Cornef Ceramics has a new corner to work in. Owner Christine Sharpe, 25, has just moved 'her ceramics studio from her house on one part of Lilla St., near Apple Valley, to a new house at 87 Lilla St. She operates the business in a © "corner" of her basement, which is chock full with greenware, glass and all the tools of the ceramics trade. While she sells greenware and glazes (Mrs. Sharpe is an authoriz- ed Duncan dealer), she focuses mainly on lessons, which are taught on Monday and Tuesday nights, Wednesday afternoons, and Satur- day mornings (which are reserved or parents and kids aged six and J She started the business last "eptember in her other house, but has been doing ceramics herself for ' more than two years. After discovering she really enjoyed the "wagraft, she took a manufac- turer's/teacher"s course and became a Duncan dealer. Although the results of ceramics are often spectacular, she says its appeal lies in how easy it is to learn. . "You don't have to have any talent," she claims. This can't help py; at. tract spectator interest. The lack of interest on the part of spectators has been the knock against the event for the past few years. People not pad- dling or those without family or close friends simply didn't want to watch canoeists cross the finish line. Getting more people into Palmer Park for the day or part of the day, where they would spend money on coffee, cold drinks sandwiches, donuts and so on (proceeds to the Museum remember) is crucial as a money making venture. That's why the suggestion of specific events at the water. | front geared for spectating is a very good one. The bigger the crowds of participants and spectators, the more money can be raised for a worthy cause. But by the same token, there are competitors like Ryg; Jammer who want to rate and they want to go the full 20 miles as they have in the past. | Surely the committee can come up with a marriage of the two factors of Canoe the Nonquon: compeitive racing, and some "fun events" that will draw a crowd and hopefully generate some cash for our Museum. There has been a suggestion made for a "challenge race" with teams of local businesses, groups or organizations that would take place right in front of the waterfront at Palmer Park. Why not? "More members of the community need to get involved in : Canoe the Nonguon from an, organization point of view and as - participants. The event has an important tradition in Port Perry and we believe that too should be maintained. Is it not possib'e todo both? The time-honoured tradition can be kept alive and at the same time some new events just might help to breathe some vitality and increase participation into Canoe the Nonquon. > They cost a little less ... but they're more than worth it?
