a 615 Luk omen wl cM Justice for fathers group (From page 12) make it through emotionally ex- hausting times. The group is called 'Fathers For Justice because 87 percent of the time, mothers are awarded custody of children. In these cases, fathers « become non-custodial parents and often their visits become subject to the whims and wishes of their ex- wives, regardless of court orders. "Sometimes a custodial parent plays games to 'get' the other per- son," Donna points out. Often, a custodial parent can do things like not sending proper clothing for a visit, telling children they need something and to "ask your father," belittling the father in front of children and even shipping a child somewhere else on a designated visiting weekend. "For example, a father could go to pick up the child only to find out "he has gone camping with the Scouts or something," Donna explained "That's fine, but why can't the custodial parent inform the non- custodial parent in advance?" Sometimes a custodial parent goes as far as convincing a child his or her non-custodial parent is "no good." The bad feelings of divorce too often are injected into a child against a non-custodial parent, resulting in fear and hatred. "Unfortunately, the child is used as a pawn,' Donna said. Even a visit can turn into an ugly situation if the parents continue to' © fight and bicker after a divorce. To combat these situations, Fathers For Justice has introduced "transfer centres' where a non- custodial parent can pick up a child for visiting on neutral territory. Several of these centres now ex- ist in the Toronto area and are run- ning successfully. Realizing there must be many "people in Durham with problems similar to their own, they have decided to form a chapter of Fathers For Justice in this area. First off, they'd like to see how' much interest there would be from other people in the community, and if they do hear from a few people, they will likely start meetings on a monthly basis in their own home. When the membership grows larger, they will move to a hall. In the meantime, anyone interested in more information about the group can call either T "i or Donna at 986-5233. -- OUR BIGGEST STORE-WIDE SALE OF THE SEASON WITH SPECTACULAR SAVINGS ON HUNDREDS OF ITEMS!
