A group of Greenbank karate students have decided to put their knowledge and heads together (not literally) in order to do some fun- draising for Settlement House, home of an Oshawa-based program "for single mothers serving all of Durham Region. : Sandra Sweet is both the co- ordinator of Sole Support Mothers Program and a black belt in karate, -as well as an assistant instructor at - the Greenbank Shoto Kan Karate Club. ' Together with another black belt and fellow member Brian Norrish. who lived in Greenbank, she is pro- moting a special self-defence course for women, with funds going towards Settlement House work. The short course will be held Wednesday, April 15 at Greenbank Community Hall, where the club gets together to work out every Wednesday and Sunday. The.even- ing gets underway at 7 p.m. with a regular workout and demonstration, before breaking into the self-defence course at 8 p.m. Unfortunately, the course will on- ly be offered to friends and relatives of members and Shoto Kan, simply because of space limitations. However, both Sandra and Brian say if the program proves popular, and if other community groups are interested, they will offer the course to the public In the meantime, there will be no fee fdr the April 15th course. Any funds raised by the venture will come from donations asked for at .the door Brian is hoping to come up with at - least $100 or more to give to Settle- ment House (not to be confused with the Port Perry.store). ~ Settlement House is an actual big old white house on Simcoe Street in Oshawa, housing many and varied «programs Sandra, for example 1s in charge of two programs, both designed to help single mothers who find themselves alone with children for many reasons mciading © divorce or death The first program. called Life abuse ™ Management, is an activity-based' program for moms designed to build their self-confidence. Fitness, cook- ing, and special workshops teach skills and confidence to women who are usually: at low ebbs of their lives. The other program, called SEE (Self-Exploration and Empower- ment), builds up communication skills, teaches stress management, and helps single mothers deal with day-to-day problems such as money, food and housing. Although Settlement House isn't a residence, it does take many refer- rals from Auberge, a shelter and residence for abused and battered women. Settlement House was formed more than 50 years ago and now pro- vides services for everyone from senior citizens to children, including single mothers. One of the biggest programs is emergency food services, providing food to those who need it. Sandra says many people in this area can't comprehend how many families in Durham are suffering financial hardships and she claims the de- mand for emergency food is grow- ing every year. "The Christmas before last, for example, I'd never seen so much food donated," she said. "*And it ran out in April. It's the same this year." Usually Settlement House holds food drives only at Christmas time. but because of the demand. it is hosting yet another drive this com- ing weekend. Anyone with canned goods or non-perishables is invited to drop it off to the Settlement House anytime this weekend. That's why both Sandra and Brian df, I, are hoping the self-defence night | - will be a success. : Chief instructor (Sen Sei) Dave ff Ivens, along with his assistants and members (which number 28) will be 3 providing hands-on demonstrations of self-defence for women. Participants will be taught the § basics of how to escape a potential- 4 ly dangerous situation and how to prevent an attack in the first place. Although many women in this area 'may feel safe from attack (unlike those who live in cities). Sandra says this feeling is a mistake. "Ldon't think anyone should be so naive as to think they're safe." she pointed out. Statistics prove the majority of at- tacks come from acquaintances. and Sandra says you just never know when or where an attack might take place. While the course won't make anyone a black belt like Sandra (who weighs in at a mere 96 pounds and could probably take on Hulk Hogan if she wanted to), it will demonstrate enough basic techni- ques to help women escape most dangerous situations. "It's strike and leave," she said. "You break the hold and run as fast as you can." For more information about the course.
