Six hundred 'students from all over Durham Region packed the PPHS gymnasium for the first-ever region-wide air band contest (it's the second of its kind in the history of the province). More than 10 high schools took part in the contest, with 12 different "air bands" mouthing the words, faking it on instruments, and rock- ing the night away to the tunes of greats like Bon Jovi, Run DMC, Ig- gy Pop, Janet Jackson the Beastie Boys and, ef course, Billy Idol." The Billy Idol band, led by the flamboyant Mike Kosurko (who dyed his hair plantinum blond for the occasion), was awarded first prize in the contest by two judges - from CKAR radio. The win thunderous enthusiasm from 'the Port Perry crowd in attendance because Kosurko and his colleagues are PPHS students. Another PPHS band, Run DMC, tied for third with an Uxbridge band, Bon Jovi. Second prize was captured by Brock High School with Club Nouveau. Leaping lizards! Can this boy jump! If it wasn't-for their persistence, the contest might not have even hap- pened because their principal was leery at first about the ramifications of inviting students from other schools to a social event such as the contest. Armour and Goreski talked him into it, however, and the contest was ' ye Mike Kosurko had Billy Idol's famous curled lip sneer down pat for the air band contest, as did his stage mate Celia Williamson. so successful, principal Morrison will be taking a full report of it to a Durham-wide principal's meeting. The contest was well covered by media including a camera crew from City-tv's Toronto Rocks video program, Cable 10 in Pickering, and various newspapers. And just in case the coverage isn't enough to remind students how much fun they had, the T-shirts designed by PPHS student Bill Im- perial (free with ticket price) should jog their memories.
