42 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 14, 1987 a -- ---- FT -- SRO Poaater ws RE EE With this bright smile, it's no ¥ % wonder Leah Michener was nam- ed Senior Volunteer of the Year. The catch is, Mrs. Michener was honoured thousands of miles away, in sunny Largo, Florida! See story for details. Qe -------- TB a A ae PTR Bp Te TET Leah Michener is quite a celebri- ty in Largo, Florida, these days. The Greenbank resident, who spends her winters in a trailer park in the sunny south, was recently named Senior Volunteer of the Year by .the Pinellas County School Board. Quite an honour for a Cana- dian, who was up against many American locals for the award. And although Mrs. Michener was surprised when she heard about the award, it came as no surprise to the people she worked with at Fuguitt Elementary School, where she has been doing volunteer work for near- ly a decade. The friendly, soft-spoken woman and her husband had been going to Four Seasons mobile home park for some time, and until Mr. Michener passed away in 1977, she was kept busy-with couple-oriented activities such as shuffleboard. After his death, "I didn't know what to do, so I went down there anyways." © Alone in the trailer park, she sear- ched for something to occupy her time, and naturally turned to the public school across the road. With 35 years teaching experience under her belt, Mrs. Michener was welcomed to the school with 'open arms. "They can always use more volunteers,' she said. She'started out tutoring but wound up in the library where she has been helping children with projects, organizing books, updating card catalogues and other assorted' library tasks. Mrs. Michener says she really en- joys hef work at the school, so the Good Times is just that "Another Saturday night with nothing to do and nowhere to go" Do you know that while you've been watching old reruns on TV, or 'walking the streets, some people are having Good Times at Port Perry High School? Two weeks ago she was honoured at a breakfast hosted by the prin- cipal of the school, where she met county and area superintendents, as well as other recipients of similar volunteer awards. After the breakfast, she was of- ficially recognized at the Board of- fice, but that was only the begining. Later on, a TV camera crew follow- ed her around while she worked, and later featured her story on the night- M&I AUTOMOTIV Greenbank resident honoured in Florida {: Senior volunteer of year ly news. So far, Mrs. Michener has chock- ed up 7200 hours of volunteer service . and she says she'll be back in Florida again next winter to add up even more. For now, though, she's safely ensconced on Greenbank soil, tak- ing a vacation from her winter vacation. REPAIRS TO: ASK FOR Motorcycles (Stock & Performance) Lawn Mowers Outboard Motors E (a?
