a I A A. The Durham Regional Police Association has called upon the On- tario Police Commission to in- vestigate the operation of the Durham Regional Police Force. . Citing the safety of police officers and citizens as the prime concern. Police Association President Dale Allan says that a serious situation is developing as a result of a critical manpower shortage. For several years the Association, which represents most of the department's 400 plus police of- ficers, has requested substantial in- creases in staffing to keep up with "the Region's phenomenal growth. "The Police Commission has allow- ed the Force to fall well below the level of other regions and the quali- ty of police service has suffered ac- cordingly," Allan says. Statistics indicate that the popula- tion of the Region policed by the Furce has increased by 23.5 percent since 1979 with a 43.8 percent in- crease in crime during the same period. Calls for police service went up more than 54 percent but the Force expanded by only 16 percent with police officers being increased by only 12 percent. Only 23 officers, 3 cadets and 8 civilians will be hired by the Durham Force in 1987 which is the largest increase approved by Regional Council in more than five years. : Chief of Police Jon M. Jenkins was recently quoted as saying that the.addition of the above employees "'is less than a third of what would be required to bring his force up to average with other regional police forces across the province." He also indicated that to reach the provin- cial average his police department would require an additional 46 police officers and 27 civilian staff over and above their 1987 request. The Association expresses its con- cern that the hiring of personnel in 1987 does not consider the rapid growth of the Region of Durham, Chamber pledge The Scugog Chamber of Commerce has pledged $5,000 over the next two years towards new X-ray equipment at the Community Memorial Hospital. Chamber of Commerce president Elgin Knopp (right) turned over the pledge to hospital administrator David Brown last week, while Roger Moase, also from the local chamber of commerce looked on. The new X-ray equipment is now being installed and all units should be in place and working in about six weeks. Total cost of the three units is $280,000 and the hospital's special fundraising drive so far has raised $190,000. Any group or organization seeking to pledge funds for this cause should con- tact administrator Dave Brown at the Hospital. 7A & High Street country 'Patience often gets the credit that belongs to fatigue.' particularly in light of the 7203 new residential permits issued in 1986. Early indications are that this trend will continue. Mr. Allan would not provide exact PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 28, 1987 -- 9 Police face manpower shortage details but suggested that most citizens would be outraged if they knew how few police officers are patrolling the streets at certain times of the day. 'Ask anyone who has needed the police how long it takes us to get there," Mr. Allan states, 'and what benefit is there to a 911 system if there is no police of- ficer available to answer the call?"
