At its regular budget meeting two weeks ago Scugog Council trimmed the Library Board's request 'rom $113,758 to $100,000 as they felt the increase was "exorbitant." The turn-around came about at budget discussion Monday morning this week when councillor Howard Hall put forward a motion to recon- sider the Library's budget and give them the money they requested. "*Scugog Township is way behind other comparable municipalities, right at the bottom of the scale," Councellor Hall said referring to the salaries and staffing in other libraries. In explaining the large increase in the Library budget, Township treasurer Kathleen Harper said that most of the 22 percent increase was attributed to bringing the wages of local library employees in line with others in the area. "We are pretty far below municipalities of equal size," she said. Councillor Christie, who was in- 241 Queen S strumental in making the motion to cut the budget two weeks ago, said she still has trouble accepting the in- crease because very little of the budget is related to increased ser- vices for the public. '"The increase is strictly for salaries of those who are already working at the library," she said. Councillor Christie was also critical of statistical information presented to council in regards to salaries and staff saying that statistics can tell you anything you want them to. 'All you have todo is pick out the information that is most valuable to your argument and leave the rest out," she said. Mayor Jerry Taylor, who was not in the Mayor's. cha'r during the meeting, said that he did not have any problem with the original " budget. "The library is one of the most popular and best used buildings in the township and the operating costs there continue to rise like other facilities in the township," he said. - After a lengthy discussion coun- cillor Howard 'Hall called for a recorded vote on a motion to reinstate the original request for $113,748, with the result being a tie.
