The new Dodge van, specially equipped for transporting wheel chairs is now operating in the two municipalities, and that's great news for those physically handicap- ped individuals who have no other means of getting around. Doug Manuel, general manager of Handi Transit Inc., the non profit company which runs the service in Oshawa, Whitby, Newcastle and now Scugog-Uxbridge, told the Star last week that it is available for anyone with a permanent or tem- porary physical disability, primari- ly those confined to wheel chairs, but also those who must use crut- ches or walkers. The van, which is dispatched from « Oshawa, will operate Tuesday and Thursday in Scugog and Monday and Wednesday in Uxbridge. Mr. Manuel said the van will take the disabled anywhere in Durham Region for any reason, but medical visits will be given priority. "This is a public transit system for the disabled. There are no restrictions," he stated. The cost for a return trip in-town (Port Perry) is $3, while a round trip from Port Perry to Oshawa is $8.50. The fare increases slightly from points outside Port Perry. There is also seating for two non-wheel chair per- sons, And the van is-air¢conditioned for comfort. ; A fully hydraulic loading ramp means an individual can get in and out of the van without getting out of the wheel chair. The cost of the van with all the additional equipment was $37,000. Half of that amount came from the provincial government, the re- mainder was raised through public donations in Uxbridge and Scugog . "I really want to emphasize the contributions that came from the two communities, and the efforts of Elizabeth Fulford from Scugog Community Care," said Mr. Manuel. ~The operating costs will be shared by Uxbridge and Scugog Townships and are estimated at about $25,000 annually. . Mr. Manuel and Mrs. Windsor spent much of last week taking the van to nursing homes and hospitals in the two Townships to let people know the service is now in operation. "The response was fantastic," he said. '"'Now these people are able to get out and get around. There are some (in the communities) who just have not been able to get."
