A new addition to Canoe the Non- quon is the Girls & Boys 10 - 14 years of age classes. This 250 meter course is set up as a friendly challenge between schools, with safety being a prime concern. Although the school officials, teachers and students are involved in the events, we must stress that this is not a school event. We thank all people concerned for allowing us to promote the events throughout the schools. Please read on as all details of the race will be covered in this article. Classes: Girls 10-11, Girls 12-13, Girls 14, Boys 10-11, Boys 12-13, Boys 14. This course is a 250 meter sprint course in front of Palmer Park, Port Perry. Anyone wishing to pre-run or practice the course may do so as of May 31. This is when the course will be set up. Remember that there is plenty of room at the park, so invite your parents, family, friends and sponsors to come and cheer you on! K SAFETY A lot of emphasis has been put on 'safety. There will be patrol boats surrounding the course. Also each participant must wear a govern- ment approved lifejacket. ELIGIBILITY -- Only 2 paddlers per -boat allowed. . -- Paddlers must fall into age groups as set. Age is as of race day. -- Paddlers must be of the same sex. CT -- Each paddler must wear a government approved lifejacket. - -- For ease of school identification we advise that' each participant wear a school jersey, or school colours. ' REGISTRATION This will be done"at the schools, beginning May 25, 1987. All permis- sion and entry forms must be sign- ed by parents where indicated. Sponsor money and sponsor sheets must be handed in at registration. These classes will be by pre- registration only. TIMES OF SPECIAL INTEREST Races will begin at 9:00 a.m., however early arrival is advised. Awards will be presented when all sprint races are finished, at approx-- imately 11:30 a.m. ENTRY FEE As Canoe the Nonquon is a ma jor fundraiser for the Scugog Shores Historical Museum, we ask that each participant collect sponsors ard sponsor money. There is a minimum requirement of $10.00 per - canoe, however, special prizes are awarded for people who collect sponsor money. PRIZES Each participant has an equal op- portunity at all prizes being offered. 1) Each participant will receive a Canoe the Nonquon crest and a paticipant ribbon. 2) For the participants who collect $50.00 or more in sponsor money, hats with the Canoe the Nonquon crest on them will be given, Free! 3) If you collect $100.00 or more in sponsor money you will receive a gift certificate valued at 20 percent of your total sponsor money col- lected. You will also receive the Canoe the Nonquon hat mentioned above. Example: Should you collect $200.00 in sponsor money, (which is very easy to do) your gift certificate will be for $40.00. These gift cer- tificates are redeemable at one of the following: House of Howard, Pineridge Sports, Brock's Depart: ment Store, Sportsland, Gord Lewis Motors. The certificates must be redeemed on or before July 31, 1987. 4) Medals will be awarded to each 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner in each catagory. 5) First place winner will also be presented with a large rotating trophy. This trophy will be kept by the winners for 1 year, then must be returned for next year's races. Points will be awarded to each school for par- . ticipants entered, finishing posi- tions, etc. The school with the most points will become the "Regatta Champions" and receive a pennant to hang up at the school. As you can see there is lots going on in this event. Even if you do not qualify to paddle the events you can still help your school win, and sup- port the Museum, by collecting sponsor money for members of your school team. You would then become eligible to win hats, gift cer- - tificates and the $50.00 prize money. Be sure to put your name, as well as the name of your school, at the top of the sponsor sheets. Next week we will be detailing the Canoe the Nonquon River Race. There have been some interesting modifications made for the river classes, so please look for the article. It is the hopes of the Canoe the Nonquon committee to eventually establish a canoe club on Lake 'Scugog.
