Prior to the Music Fest competi- tions at the Congress Centre in Ot- tawa, the groups journeyed to Quebec City and performed at Laval University with Rejean Marois, music director at CEGEP St. Foy. Music Fest Canada brought the top bands and choirs from across the country together. Rather than ranking the groups, the judges gave them ratings of gold, silver, bronze and honourable mention. Adjudication for the vocal groups Youngster finds six balloons It's not uncommon these days to find one balloon from a faraway place, but a three year old Blackstock. gitl found six, alt clustered together. Little Candace Cunday dicavered the balloons last Wednesday, May 13, at the side of her Highway 57 house, between the garage and a fence. Her mom, Carol Huntington, says Candace found the balloons at 5:30 'p.m., and according to cards attach- ed to the helium fliers, they were set loose earlier the same day. - All six balloons came from a'stu- . dent from Blessed Trinity School in Toronto, Diana Griffin. balloons, decorated with'emblems from Inner City Angels, were part of a ninth annual balloon race, a fun- draising event with proceeds going to further children's participation and education in the arts. The return address on the cards is Scadding House, 6 Trinity Square , in Toronto. Candace, with the help of her mom, sent back one of the cards to Miss Griffin. "Joking with a post office employee when she mailed the card, Mrs. Huntington said, 'It'll probably take longer to mail the card back to Toronto, then it took to arrive by balloon." : The was handled by Phil Marsden, pro- fessor of music at a university in Washington State, and Ward Swingle, director of the New .Swingle Singers. For the band competition, the judges were Dr. Vondis Miller, pro- fessor of music at University. of Alberta; Dr. Bram Smith, former director of the Canadian Forces z Band, ana Col. John Bourgeois, director of bands for the U.S. Marine Corps. The members of the Senior Wind Ensemble and Jazzmerize are to be congratulated for their outstanding performances against top level | competition. 'Both groups did an outstanding Job," said director Charles White. { Three year old Candace Cunday, of Blackstock, was absolutely thrilled to discover a gaggle of colourful balloons that had travell- ed from Toronto to Scugog in record time.
