Just Around The Corner Whether its antique glass, fine art or a high-flying kite, you can find it Just Around The Corner. An appropriate name for one of Port Perry's newest places to shop, Just Around The Corner is exactly that, just around the corner from busy Queen Street, in between the 'Royal Bank and the LCBO on Perry Street. Not just one shop, Just Around The Corner is actually a collection of shops under one roof. Going through the front door is like stepp- ing into someone's private home, with each room serving a different purpose. The entranceway is filled with a pleasant jumble of flower seeds and plant accessories, leading into the main shop, called Cottage Rose. Inside Cottage Rose is an incredi- ble collection of gifts, all displayed in a country atmosphere. Most im- pressive is a vast collection of anti-_ que glass and china, in all shapes, colours and ages. The collection comes mostly from shop owner Barb' Goodman's mother, Joan Lock. Mrs. Lock had been collecting the antiques for many years, always with the inten- tion of opening a shop. When daughter Barb Goodman decided to open Cottage Rose, it seemed only natural for Mrs. Lock to display her immense collection within it. But antique glass isn't the only item for sale at Cottage Rose. Mrs. Goodman has jam-packed the cheerfully decorated store with gifts of every description, from fragrant pot pourri's, to candy, dolls, and folk art. All these items are shown off with the store's bright decor, featuring real pine floors, lattice ceilings, © country wallpaper, and pretty chintz drapery. The pine continues into the hallway (where colourful and whim- sical kits are sold) and into a virtual gallery of fine art, where shoppers can take a moment out to sit down and enjoy a room filled with pain- tings by renowned artists. Mrs. Goodman says the room's 'displays will change often, with special events such as artists' sign- ing sessions. She's. even starting a monthly ; newsletter, featuring news of up- coming events, which will be given "away. And by the time summer rolls around, the complex will.also con- tain the Wheat Sheaf Cafe, a relax-" ing place where light lunches are 'served, and where people can sit . down and relax over a coffee. "Everything is an atmosphere here," Mrs. Goodman says. 'A con- tained area, where people can come "in, browse, and have a coffee. When we planned this, we said, how can we make this a nice environment. See story for details on.a charming new gift shop. That's most important. If there's neat things in it, that would be a bonus." "We includes her mom, her hus- band Bob Goodman (a plumber who . has been doing a lot of carpentry work, including Cottage Rose's uni- que and beautiful pine counter), and friend Gord Lee, who helped Mrs. Goodman design the look she wanted. Creating that look has been a lot of work. At one time, the building was used to show movies, and when Mrs. Goodman first saw it, the bolts which held the seats to the cement floor were still intact. But what once resembled a barn, 1S now a cozy collection of rooms, each one featuring something The different. Mrs. Goodman says she's pleas- ed with the results, but claims its just a beginning. In the meantime, it has already fulfilled her desire to- ~ "get back into building something" after spending the last few years raising her family. ~ ""The kids are getting older, and I felt like I'd been sitting on ideas too long. I drove by the old cinema and said to myself, soméone should do something to fix that place up," she recalls. Three weeks later, she had made up her mind to do it herself. "I've been in this area a long time," she explains. "'I guess what it comes down to is just loving the town." | Cottage Gallery Custom Picture Fram ing - Gifts "581 KING ST.. EAST. OSHAWA.
