A 20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 24, 1987 It's a long way to work If you own a vehicle, you know how expensive and difficult it is to repair First, you have to drag it into the shop, and then you have to wait a few days, or more, before you can empty your wallet and take it home _ again Wouldn't it be nice to have so- meone come to your backyard, take a look at the equipment, and repair it on the spot? Trouble is, who could you possibly call to have that done? And who would want to do it"? Ken Nakajima will do. it, even though he lives about 7,000 miles away The smiling Japanese man, who ~ makes his home in Osaka, is spen- ding two months in Canada this year (he'll leave in July), doing nothing | "but inspecting, and if necessary, repairing tractors. Not just any tractors, mind you. Mr. Nakajim is a factory technician who works for Kubota, the largest tractor manufacturer in Japan, and the largest under 40 horsepower tractor maker in the world. For the last three years, Kubota An innovative and highly personal new pro- gram from Kubota, a Japanese tractor manufac- turer, has Japanese factory technicians travell- _ ing all over the world to ensure their products has been sending factory techni- cians like Mr. Nakajim to various places around the world where the company's tractors are sold, visiting farmers in their own backyards, and (inspecting their Kubota tractors "In a two to three hour inspection, Mr. Nakajima looks over nearly every part of the tractor, searching for abnormalities, and fixing what he can on site. John Cumming, division manager of Kubota for Ontario and the Maritimes, works with Mr. Naka- jima travelling from one farm to the next, and he says the program is an excellent one. "It's a tremendously aggressive program, | think," he said. "It's unheard of! And I think it's one of 'the keys to why the Japanese are do- ing so well in this business. It gives the customer an opportunity to have answers to any questions he might have, but it's a two-way street. We learn a heck of a lot as well." Any complaints or suggestions farmers might have are forwarded to the plant, where recommenda- tions for change are made. for Japanese technician "The Japanese are doing the same thing to the tractor industry as they did to the car industry," Mr Cumming said. *'Quality." Last Friday afternoon, Mr. Cum- ming and Mr. Nakajima, along with Bruce Donneral of B & W Farm Ser- vice, a Kubota dealership in the north end of Scugog Township, visited the farm of Herman Hempen and his son George, south of Green- bank. While the Hempens looked on, Mr. Nakajima went over their trac- tor from stem to stern. For the Hempens, it was a free check-up, for the Kubota company, it was good public relations, and for Mr. Nakajima, it's a great chance to travel, even though he sees little besides tractors and hotel rooms. He says he enjoys the job im- mensely, but he does have one com- plaint. Seems the farmers' wives fill him up with farm-sized helpings of home baking and fresh coffee. "I gained 10 kilos last year!' he said, laughing, After he leaves Canada, he'll spend a month in South America before heading home, which will hopefully give hinr lots of time to wear off our 'down home" cooking. are running smoothly.
