12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 2, 1987 Capital punishment To The Editor: There is only one question that needs to be answered during the death penalty debate: does it work" Is Capital Punishment a general deterrent? Not withstanding the view of some of the public, the ex- perts by in large say NO, it does not deter. Does it enhance the moral fibre of Canadian society? Some of us might disagree, but the majori- ty of our moral leaders say it diminishes our moral standard: Can the death of one person atone for the death of another? NO it can not Nothing can. Can we say that the majority of "informed" voters favour the return of thif measure? A recent Gallop poll showed, that since there has been discussion on this issue over the past six months, those wanting the return of the death penalty has. significantly dropped. The more this debate becomes public and people are informed of the facts, the more Canadians will see the futility of the death penalty. Can first degree murderers be rehabilitated"? | and my organiza- tion have over the years worked with many men who have murdered, including some original- ly sentenced to die. We know from our experience that many can go on to become responsible citizens. Surely a mark of a civilized and pro- gressive country is to be able to turn around some of those who have committed the most despicable of acts. Our parliamentarians should listen to the informed debaters before making up their minds. If they do so, the ma jority will vote NO to returning capital punishment. Yours sincerely, - Jeff Wilbee, Director: Community Relations, St. Leonard's Society of Canada, Stratford, Ontario. Wait til next year To The Editor: Many months ago, I sent an ap- peal out to the Phantom, requesting assistance for Scugog Township, in its hour of need. Well Phantom, whoever you may be, my thanks, and those of the Par- ticipaction Challenge Day Planning Committee, go out to you. Without your help and your support, Challenge Day '87 would not have been as successful (or as much fun!) as it was. We may not have been top " Township this year, but the spirit of Scugog is a mighty "one, and I'm sure you "ll lead us on to victory next year! (After all, we did beat Ux- bridge, and Ajax and Newcastle on- ly beat us by a slim 2 percent and 3 percent respectively!) All in all, Phantom, I'd say Scugog Township had a wonderful day -- and ous thanks to you once again, for your Phantastic support! . Yours truly, Bette Hodgins, Fitness Challenge Planning Committee. Wreath re turned To The Editor: I guess I may have jumped to con- . clusions too fast last week in my let- ter to thq editor concerning the wreath which disappeared from my mother's grave in Pine Grove Cemetery However, the letter did get results. 1 wad contacted by. Mr Raby, the caretaker, and he told me the wreath was removed because after the grass cutting time in the cemetery starts, these wreaths are not permitted. The wreath was set aside and we now have it returned to us. 1 hope my letter last week did not hurt - anybody and if so. | apologize. <x wh With thanks Yours truly, Mary Payne Scugog Township Editorial Comments (From page 4) ple resented being treated like grade two school kids who haven't quite yet mastered the task of lacing up their own shoe-laces. 'A reading of the text suggests he stills feels that way about ten premiers, the current Prime Minister, a host of former Prime Ministers and premiers and anyone else who chances to disagree with his vi- sion of Ganada: My way or no way at all. It is little wonder that Mr. Trudeau failed SO many times to find unanimity among the ten premiers and himself. Retirement from public office has taught him nothing. He still thinks he can affect change by talking down his nose, insulting people and belittling their honest efforts. So he hasn't changed a bit. Sincerely, Letters Opposes car dealership Lasalle. He went on to say that if council decides in favour of the zoing change, he wants assurances that a large fence and a berm is.' constructed between his property and the dealership. ~ Guy Latreille, representing the owner of the land being considered for the car dealership, told council that if the re-zoning is approved. a garage and showroom of some 15,000 square feet would he con structed on the property. The re. zoning would cover just under fi - acres of land. ~~ Council made no decision Mon. day afternoon on the re-zoning ap- plication. Pound fees fhe up The daily fee for keeping a dog or cat in the Scugog-Uxbridge municipal pound has been raised from $3.50 to $5.00 to reflect in- creasing costs. And the number of days the pound will hold an animal has been reduced from five to three. Township council passed a by- law amendment for these changes Monday afternoon. Area councillor Harvey Graham wondered if the reduction in the number of days the pound holds an animal is fair as some pet owners could be away from home when their animal is picked up by the dog catcher. Township administrator Earl Cuddie said that if a dog has a current tag when it is picked up, a)l efforts would be made to con- tact the owner, and it is 'not likely the dog would be destroyed" in three days if the owners could not be contacted. -» i Port Perry. by the birds. I haven't heard of any plans by council yet to make this into a parkette but if it was done it could be a beautiful spot. If nothing is done soon, it will be an eyesore for downtown Secondly, it appears as if a couple of families of Canada Geet are making their home in and around Palmer Park. It's really nice to see these majestic wild birds around the park, but it is already beginning to cause problems. Unfortunately, these beautiful birds are not trained to go to the washroom in any one spot, so walking in the park has become a bit of an obstacle course. To give an example of how bad it could get if something isn't done soon, in Uxbridge where dozens of Canada Geese nest each year, they have had to close down the park and the swimming area in the past because of the pollution caused I don't claim to know what the answer is, but it' S a pro- blem that should be confronted soon. ¢ = DPuid ya ursty ng 985- i KIM RYSBORO 257 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY DAVID'S HAIRSTYLING would like to introduce two new members to our staff ...
