EEE PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 2, 1987 -- 25 Minor Softhall & | celebrates its ) 25th birthday The Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association is celebrating its 25th birthday this year and to mark the occasion a special dinner: social evening was held last Satur- day at the Port Perry Legion Hall. Numerous past presidents, ex- ecutive members, coaches and managers who have worked with the organization over the years were present for the banquet and they spent a lot of time swapping stories about the many highlights that have taken place since 1962. The Legion Hall was nicely decorated for the occasion Saturday night with displays of softball equip- ment, pennants, crests, autograph- -ed softballs from crucial games, old photos and newspaper clippings of many of the teams which have been successful over the years. Minor Softball got off the ground in the summer of 1962 when Vin Walker organized a Squirt team. He built a field and back-stop in his back-yard where his young team could practise, and that fall the - players competed in the O.A. S.A. championship tournament. "We got to the fina] game, but went down to defeaft~22-0," Vin recalled. He predicted that in three years, Port Perry would win the championship, and he was right as ~ the 1965 Squirts brought the first O.A.S.A. banner home to Port Perry. The Association was actually formed in September 1962 and several of the founding executive members were present at the ban- quet Saturday evering, including Carl Luke (charter president) Elmer Lee, Don Cochrane, Vin Walker, Don Hurst, and Rod Foster. The evening was MC'd by Wayne Venning and special guest speaker was Bill Topping, president this year of the Ontario Amateur Soft- 'ball Association. Mr. Topping paid tribute to the many volunteers who have given countless hours over the years to assure the success of Minor Softball in Port Perry. He said the 0.A.S.A. has had an excellent relationship with Port Perry over the last 25 years, noting that two men from Port Perry (Vin Walker and Jack Cook Jr.) have served the O.A. S.A. as president. "Port Perry has had great suc- cess in softball on and off the field. There was always a sense of fair play," said Mr. Topping. "It is especially gratifying to see the youngsters grow into teen-agers and adults who become good citizens in the community," he stated. "The many championships for Port "Perry speaks well for the coaches, players and managers and the loyal fans who Support the sport in the community," said the president. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Topping presented seven "outstanding service" awards. The' recipients of these 0.A.S.A. framed certificates were Don Hurst, Wayne Venning, Rod Foster, Gary McHugh, Donn Gray, Rob Cooper and Elmer Lee. MC Wayne Venning re-counted a brief history of the last 25 years, noting many of the successful teams. Current Minor Softball presi- dent Carolyn Best presented Association plaques of appreciation to about 20 people who contributed to the sport and supported the organization during the first quarter century: - Mrs. Best noted that this summer, there are about 450 young boys and girls registered for softball on 31° House League teams and four rep teams. The organization has a small army of about 90 volunteers serving as coaches, managers, convenors and executive members. 'We've come a long way,' she concluded. XL Eagles still mired ina slump Port Perry XL Eagles continued their early season slump this past week with league losses to ACL 7-3 and Greenbank Gamblers 5-2. In Oshawa, Port Perry jumped off to a quick 2-0 lead on a homerun by Dave Dickson in the first inning. . ACL fought back scoring once in the second inning and twice in the fifth inning to take the lead 3-2. Colin Wackett led off the sixth inning with a double and was driven home by Dickson's RBI single to tie the score 3-3. "In the seventh inning ACL put the game away with four unanswered runs for the victory.
