Doug believes peo- ry has opened ple are far more relaxed Having their portraits taken in familiar surroundings. (See story) Signature Studios takes great snaps If you' re thinking of having a per- . sonal or family portrait taken this summer, Signature Studios may be "what you're looking for. Port Perry native Doug Potts is the man behind the newly opened Signature Studios, which really isn't a studio in the traditional sense. Doug is a highly skilled profes-: sional photographer and 'he's ~ specializing in what he calls "'en- vironmental portraiture" which -means he'll take his camera to your home, the back yard, the garden or just about anywhere you may like to have your portrait shot. Doug says that by taking portraits be of people in their own familiar sur- roundings (like the home or the garden) people tend to be much more relaxed and informal. "People are at ease in their own home, especially young children. They feel comfortable having their picture taken,' he explained. - Not only does Doug take 'his camera on location for a photo ses- sion, he will bring the proofs to the home for people to select the re- prints they want, and he will deliver the final prints. What it means is that people can have a formal or not-so-formal photo taken by a professional without ever having to leave their homes. Doug works with a medium for- 'mat camera (a Mamiya RZ67) and depending on the circumstances, he'll use either natural light or studio lighting with flash. A sitting in-home or other location will take about an hour, longer if a lot of people are involved and a lot of different poses are requested. His rates start at about $50. As well as portraits, Doug also does commercial photography and weddings. But he's booked solid with weddings each weekend from now - to late fall. Doug studied commercial photography at Humber College in Toronto. One of his prints (a beautiful photo of a mother and in- fant) won him second place in a competition open to al] photography students in Ontario. For the past three years he has been working for ~ an Oshawa studio, while free- : lancing weddings for another studio" in Oshawa. He recently decided to set up "Signature Studios" in Port Perry. Eventually, he hopes to actually have a traditional studio in the community. In the meantime, he'll be specializing in location portraiture, photographing people in the sur- 'roundings they feel most comfor- table in.
