Switzer Motors team edges IGA squad at the finish line Lots of excitement at Challenge The team sponsored by Bob Switzer Motors of Port Perry paddl- ed to a narrow victory in the first an- nual Challenge Canoe Race held Saturday during the Festival Days weekend. Team members Terri Gibson, Robert Baird, Mike Freeman and Dave Booth will have the honour of having their names first on the Challenge Cup donated by Emmer- son Insurance. They just edged out the second place team sponsored by IGA of Rudy Jammer, Steve DeHaas, Kurt Jammer and Rob Page by less than two canoe lengths in the champion- ship heat over the 1000 metre sprint course. There were nine teams of four paddlers each entered in this ex- citing event organized by Lang Cope who says he expects the number of entries to increase next year. "I'm quite pleased with the way things went for the first year," he told the Star. In the mixed entry class, the Ridge North Realty sponsored team of Reit Orde, Sean Waterston, Kira Cope and Scott Wallace took top place, just ahead of a Durham Region Police team made up of Wal- ly Wilson, Nancy George, Mike Donaldson and Tim Pokaluk. Third place in this class went to the Cen- tral Seven Team of Voyageurs 1 made up of Frank Murphy, Peter Fuller, Jeanette Porter and Desiree Yokum. In the business class, the third place team was Rent and Save's Barry Page, Glenn Page, Rob Didiomete and John Scott. The preliminary heats provided plenty of excitement as the teams raced from waterfront to a coloured marker some 500 metres away and then back to the shore where pad- dlers changed canoes for the second leg. Several canoeists found themselves in the water on the ex- change and one boat swamped at the marker in the lake.
