26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 14, 1987 This is the second in a series of ar- ticles this summer about golf courses in Durham Region. The ar- ticles are written by Port Perry Star editor John B. McClelland, based on his impressions after a round of golf. John used to be a slow handicap golfer, but these days he's quite hap- Py just to break 90. As far as I'm concerned, what makes Seaton Golf & Country Club interesting are the par three's. There are five of them on this 6,018 yard course which is located in Pickering on the Brock Road, just north of Highway 2. In my opinion, they are the best holes on the course, and they are tough. There are three on the front nine (par 34) and two on the back nine (par 36) and if you can play all five in regulation, you should be able to score well at Seaton since the par 5's are fairly easy and most of the par 4's are routine if you can keep the ball in play. Except number 7, which is anything but routine, but more about that hole later. Let's talk about these tough par 3's which can make or break a round at Seaton. The first to confront the golfer is hole No. 2. It's 193 yards (from the blue tee). I made bogey after pushing a 2-iron way right of the green. The 6th hole is 200 yards to a small green, and again I hit a 2-iron, but this time I was just short on the apron in front and chipped up for an easy par. By far the meanest par 3 hole (and one of the meanest I've played | in a long time) is No. 8. The card says 230 yards from the blue tees with the very small green directly behind a yawning sand trap. This is a tough golf hole. I managed to float a high four-wood off the teé which caught the green and came to rest 12 feet from the pin. Mighty pleased with that shot and looking at a birdie, I promptly took three putts to get down for an easy bogey. That's the stupid way to make a bogey and on this hole there are a lot of other ways to card a four or higher. Out on the back nine, the 12th is 145 yards over a large gully, so the tee shot must carry the green. Miss the green here and you're in trouble. I chipped from the fringe and made par, thank you. The 15th from the elevated blue tees reads 170 on the card, and it's all carry over a big gully to a nar- row green that slopes to the front. I made par the hard way. My six iron caught a tree on the right of the green and ended up in the gully. | then lofted a wedge just past the hole and rolled in a slippery down- hill six-footer to save par. Consider- ing where my tee shot came to rest, I was most fortunate to take a 3 and run to the next tee. So much for the par three holes. I mentioned No. 7, and it deserves a word or two. At 420 yards, it plays long. But what makes it even tougher, is the landing area for the tee shots. The fairway narrows con- siderably with deep rough on the left and large trees on the right. Tee shot placement is critical on this hole. I hit a decent drive just a little right, was stymied by a tree on the second shot, missed the green with my third and finally took two putts for a routine double. There are three par 5's at Seaton, all under 500 yards, and should be considered "birdie holes" for the better golfer. Any big hitter can cer- tainly reach them in two. But beware of the little pond just left of the green at 13. One feature of Seaton I found in- teresting is the mix of typography. The first six holes are on high, flat, table-land. Then the course takes the golfer literally over hill and dale, fairways that slope sharply in. places, some deep gullies and a lot of deep rough. On holes 7 through to 16, you simply must keep the ball in play or watch the old score soar through the roof. I was a bit tired after my round at Seaton, partly because of 'the ter- ON MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING SALE 2 Weeks Only -- July 6th to July 18th, 1987 wr. 15% OFF owe All Leather Jackets Answer Products including Pro-Glow Pants, A-Tech Helmets, Racing Shirts Yamaha Moto Cross Clothing Motorcycle Leather Gloves Still some AGV Helmets at CLEAR-OUT PRICES! I don't know why exactly, but I seem to strike the ball better on hot, humid days. Aside from a couple of holes, I was pleased with the way I went around Seaton. The fairways were in fine shape, The sixth hole at Seaton, a slightly uphill par cut short the way they should be. The greens gave me trouble as they were lightning fast, (but very true).
