Legion Squirts take 2nd place Port Perry Legion Squirt Softball team travelled to Cobourg on Satur- to compete in the annual Soft- ball Tournament. The local team was placed in a division with Napanee, Guelph, and Seven Oakes of Toronto. In the first game of the morning, Port Perry played the tournaments top team from Napanee and was defeated 3-1 in an excellent game. Napanee took an early lead on two unearned runs, but Port Perry made it 2-1 on a single by Simon Traynor and a double by Gavin Cochrane. Napanee scored a single run in the sixth inning to take the win. Simon Traynor and Gavin Cochrane had two hits each, with Scott Wylie and Greg Rankin each having a single. Jeff Card pitched a strong game and took the loss allow- ing six hits and striking out 8 Napanee batters. In game two of the tournament Port Perry allowed Guelph to take an early 6-1 lead, but battled back to score a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 9-9 tie. Simon Traynor had three base hits while Chad Venning, Jeremy Norton and Scott Wylie each had two hits. Chad Garvock, Jeff Card, Todd Smart and Gavin Cochrane all had singles. This was a game that Port Perry could have won with a little luck but in the extreme heat the team played well to make a strong comeback for the tie. In the third game of the day the local boys brought out the big bats and easily defeated Toronto Seven Oakes by a 9-4 score. The Legion Squirts scored a big six runs in the second inning on four homeruns and were never headed. Chad Venning returned to the mound for this game and battled both the heat and the Toronto team to earn the win, he allowed six hits and struck out 12 Toronto batters. Todd Smart led the hitting parade with two homeruns, while Scott Wylie and Gavin Cochrane each had a homerun and '4 single, Cory Bricknell had two hits and played a strong game at third base, Kent Jamieson and Jeff Card had homeruns while Adam Johnston, Duane Empringham, Chad Garvock and Jeremy Norton had one hit each. This win gave Port Perry 3 points in the division and a second place finish, while Napanee took top spot with 3 wins. The boys all played well in this tournament and gave Napanee the only competition they had in the tournament. Next Saturday the team travels to Gravenhurst for a tournament while in league action the Legion Squirts host East Guillimbury on Thursday night at the Lakefront Park at 6:30 p.m. and travel to Stouffville for a Friday night game. The team is starting to play good ball and will have to continue this type of play as their O.A.S.A. play will be starting in the last week of July. Some of the best arm wrestlers in Canada showed their stuff last Saturday afternoon for the second annual Festival Days Competition held in Port Perry. About 60 competitors took part in this popular event combining strength and technique for prize money and trophies in five weight classes and a ladies division. Gary Goodridge of Barrig who is the Canadian super heavyweight champion took home first place trophies in both the heavy and mid- dle weight classes. His main com- petition was Kevin Kelly of London who placed second in both classes. Kelly is a Canadian champion in the middle weight division. Goodridge put on quite a display of arm wrestling as he lost just one match all day-the semi final to Kel- Wy, PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 14, 1987 -- 27 ly in the heavy weight class. In the fly weight division, Eric Smyth of Pickering, ranked third in the world, came out the winner over Curtis Herman. Port Perry's Mike Haigh, ranked 5th in Canada in the lightweight class won his division on Saturday without suffering a loss. Second place went to Eric Smyth. It was quite a day for Mike, for not only did he compete in the matches, he did much of the organizing to bring the competition to Port Perry for Festival Days. Mike has been arm wrestling for about a year now and has done a lot to popularize this sport in the Port Perry area. In the Bantam class, Terry Bar- ton of Port Perry took the first place trophy with Dave Snooks and Mike Klock placing second and third. | Top arm wrestlers 'show their stuff Leianne Johnston of Port Perry won the ladies class over Kelly Fewer and Debbie Spence. Along with trophies, the top three competitors in each category took home $50, $25 and $10 cheques for their efforts. Mike Haigh told the Star he was very pleased with the number of en- tries and the size of the crowd in the Festival Days tent to witness the competitions. He said he hopes events like these will entice more people from the Port Perry area to start getting involved in this popular sport of arm wrestling.
