Site doubtful (From page 1) At that meeting, the Fair Board committee told council that if the Fair is forced to move, the Board wants the same facilities it has now, including a race track. Mayor Jerry Taylor told the Star after the meeting, the council has unanimously agreed that the million dollar plus price tag for duplicating those facilities is just too high for the municipality. "Our (council) position on this now is that it is up to the School Board to decide to pursue the (school) site through ex- propriation," said the Mayor. He said the council had hoped that the Fair Board would agree to staging the re-location over a period of five years to spread out the costs. Commenting further . on the issue, Mrs. Kelly said that it ap- school will open in Port Perry before the fall of 1990. She said - essentially the Board is now back ~ to square one in its search for a new site for a school. Fair Board president Rod . McKay told the Star follwing Mon- day night's meeting that the 18 month issue over the Fairgrounds ~ as a school site has "been very un- Festival enjoyed by thousands yi page 1) ing kiddies parade on Friday, the best decorated bike contest, the midway, the pre-teen dance, the air band contest, scuba and skin diving lessons, the magical illusion show, puppet show, Eric Nagler, Ish and Lenny, Kiddie races, or the Mutt Show, the youngsters had a ball. No one was happier than the Bahamian visitors, especially the guys from Boss and the Conch Shells. Organizer Larry Emmerson said, "The band members just love Port Perry. "There has been a lot of un- necessary hard feelings and everybody (Fair Board, School Board, Council and the com- munity) has lost' because of it. "We (Fair Board) just want to bury this (issue) and carry on with the Fair," he stated. Mr. McKay said the Fair Board has never been in favour of moving to a new site. 'Our first choice is to stay put and we are happy to stay where we are." However, if the Fair is forced to move, the Fair Board simply wan- ts assurance that, it will have the same facilities it has now. "That's only reasonable, " he said. "If somebody came along to ex- propriate your three-bedroom home and offered a two bedroom house, would you accept that?" he pears very un-likely that a new \ asked. The Fair Board currently leases the 22 acre Fairgrounds from the Municipality, a lease. which ex- pires in 1996. This issue over the site for a new school surfaced in early 1986 when a committee of a previous Fair Board expressed in- terest to Township council in moving to a new school site. The Durham Board of Education was looking for a new school site, and Township council offered to sell seven acres of the present Fairgrounds and move the Fair to a new location behind Scugog Arena. Over the next several mon- ths, members of the Fair Board three times turned down motions to re-locate and earlier this year the Board of Education served notice it would expropriate the seven acres of land. A consultants report prepared for the Township this spring estimated the cost of a new Fair facility at about $1.5 million. "If the Board of Education decides to carry through with ex- propriation, the courts may decide the Board is fully liable for re- location the Fair and duplicating the present facilities. Trustee Kelly said the Durham Board is now recessed until the end of August, but a special meeting ~ can be called by chairman Sandra Lawson to decide whether to push ahead with the expropriation. Mrs. Kelly said she doubts the trustees would agree to that course of action.
