A fair-sized crowd was on hand at the Joe Fowler Park to watch the Cuties do their thing. The Cuties, four guys dressed as 'ladies,' play with a pitcher, catcher, first baseman and short-stop. They played several serious inn- ings of fastball against the Eagles, before dropping into the comedy routines that included such gags as a grapefruit baseball, ball on a rope and the outrageous running com- mentary of Madame Hilda. Hilda, dressed in a purple print skirt, pink nylons and wig is actually 68-year old Trino Palacious, who founded the Cuties 41 years ago. He said after the game the team is on a six week tour of Ontario before returning to California. 'We love coming to Canada to play. It's great here. There are some good teams and the fans seem to get a real kick out of what we do," said Trino (a.k.a. Madame Hilda). The other Cuties went by the names Fifi the Flirt, Heda Hooker, Leaping Lena and Sweaty Betty. The team has played some 88 games so far this summer and lost just eight. And one of those losses came at the hands of the Port Perry Eagles on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles are playing the best fastball of their season right now, fresh from a vic- tory over Greenbank Gamblers in OASA playdowns, and they weren't fooled by the pitching of Fifi the Flirt. In fact, they knocked Fifi's pit- ching (drop ball and a change-up) around pretty good, made some great plays in the in-field and chalk- ed up a 12-3 win before the Cuties abandoned serious baseball for the comedy. It was all good fun, the crowd seemed to enjoy the antics despite the sweltering heat and a cloud- burst that interrupted the game for 15 minutes. And the players on the Eagles also seemed to enjoy themselves, play- ing straight guys to the Cuties jokes and Hilda's commentary. Asked about the 12-3 score after the game, Trino said the Cuties don't like to lose, but he said the Fagles are a good team. Net proceeds from this game were turned over to Port Perry Minor Softball.
