8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 25, 1987 Irwin Smith Music moves to bigger store La Irwin Smith had a lot to celebrate, and last Thursday night he did just that. Free hot dogs and pop, good-time music, lively dancing, and some old- fashioned conversation was the order of the evening, as Irwin celebrated the grand opening of the new location of Irwin Smith Music. The new location, at 305 Queen Street (corner of Lilla St.) is a far cry from the space he rented further down the street for the last nine years. "It (the old store) was good for me because it helped my business get established," he said. But it was also a bit on the small side for a store that specializes in retailing pianos, organs, drum sets and various other large pieces of 'musical equipment. Trouble was, it wasn't zoned for Irwin's type of business, so it wasn't until May, after going through re- zoning, that he could begin to get ready to move. First on the agenda was adding a glassed-in porch to the front of the house, in order to give him some display space. The addition was up within two weeks, and passers-by marvelled at how the addition fit right in with the rest of the house. People who don't know any different, might think it had always been there. But that wasn't all that had to be done. Tearing out a few walls, drywalling, wallpapering and pain- ting, not to mention moving, was a major undertaking that took up a great deal of Irwin's time. Still, he managed to keep the old store open (with the help of his full-time he Allisse), as well as performi many local functions. "It took every day and every pj ) 5 done," he says. But done inally was, and well : effort, Worth he "People have been tellin they think it's a classy aa fortable and homey," he says. And it is. Catering to adult customers, the rooms are sophisticated, yet warm, with plep. ty of sunlight and open space. It's definitely a good-looking store, and Irwin couldn't be blam. ed for wanting to show it off at Thursday's celebration. "The whole evening was just a chance to give something back to the people who have helped m this far." pec me gel Iper, ng at pe nda ac Laughing, he says the old store had room for maybe 11 pianos, tops, leaving virtually no room for walk- ing. The new store, on the other hand, presently houses 21 pianos and organs with plenty of space for drum sets, guitars, records, sheet music and a multitude of other musical accessories. Irwin had been looking for a big- ger location to buy for five years, " but everytime something came up, it was gone by the time he had time to think about it. When Jean Deegan's home came on the market (which housed a den- ture therapy office) last October, Ir- win didn't waste too much time thinking. Le "Three days after the sign went --- up, I had the place bought," he ~ recalls with a grin. The location, he figured, was perfect, right across the road from Town Hall 1873, where Irwin fre- quently delivers rental equipment. | Irwin Smith was all smiles last Thursday night when he official- | ly opened his new store, Irwin Smith Music, with one heck of a party. Random Jottings (From page 6) REACTION In my last column, I made mention that the Durham Board of Education did not see fit to send out their Night School course directory to the people of Scugog Township, although other communities within the Region of Durham received it through their local newspapers. ia I was happy to see, when we picked up our mail on Satur- Joint the Board of Ed. finally did get the flyers out to the ec ents of Scugog Township by mail last week, and they our are an opportunity to register for night classes in It sll remains a mystery to me why they did not Jistritute the flyers through the Star, as they did it through Ma RY spapets in all the other communities in our area. Hon IS oversight for the past two years will be corrected | eA and readers of the Star will get the same oppor- Lunity as their counterparts in neighbouring communities | ' ut haveing to remind the Durham Board of Education a oe ole ale oie of. a a a a oD ale oe afin ae of oOo ein alin that Scugog is an important part of the Region of Durham. sl
