Thieves walk away with two new benches Scugog Chamber of Commerce are at a loss to explain why benches along Queen Street are mysteriously fe pening all of a sudden. Chamber secretary, Bill Barr, who spoke as a concerned citizen ap- peared before Scugog council on Monday to express his concerns that two of the park benches have been removed from the street in less than a week. The first, which was taken from in front of Standard Trust last GRADUATE Tracie Lynn Booth, great granddaughter of the late Pearl and Walter Booth, granddaughter of Garnet and . Louise Booth, and daughter of Bill and Carolyn Booth is a graduate of Grade 13 from T. A. Blakelock High School in Oakville. Tracie will reside in Oshawa and attend Durham College for the Sports Ad- ministration program. Thursday « evening has been - recovered. Administrator/Clerk Earle Cuddie told those gathered he responded to a telephone call last Friday and found the bench aban- donned in a ditch in Port Perry. He indicated a staff member would be putting it back in its proper place shortly. But he said he was unaware of yet a second theft. This time, it was the bench in front of the Canadian Im- perial Bank of Commerce that was missing when employees reported to work early Monday morning. The Chamber and Scugog Council entered into an agreement to spend in excess of $40,000 this year to beautify the downtown area of Port Perry; a project which included seven such benches plus flower baskets and refuse containers. Mayor Jerry Taylor stated * was a shame when the Chamber hy Commerce have gone to this trouble and expense to improve the downtown to have it spoiled by an in- considerate few." Mayor Taylor went on to suggest the benches be identified as belong- ing to the Chamber in some manner such as burning the emblem into the wood to discourage theft and also to make identification easier for Durham Regional Police. In response, Barr indicated the Chamber planned 'to discuss the possibility of providing additional benches for the downtown area and shopping plaza in Port at their next meeting on Tuesday, and that Taylor's suggestion would be brought forward. He also said he planned to introduce a discussion as to.how the benches could be better secured. Presently they are attach- ed to the ground with lag screws which are readily removed with a wrench.
