Canoes of just about all description--from the massive 30-foot long war canoes to the slight (and tippy) racing kayaks were on display and most of them were zip- ping around the bay at the Port Perry waterfront. It was all part of the effort on behalf of the newly formed Scugog Canoe Club to introduce residents of the Port Perry area to the sport of canoeing and racing. Experts from the two well known Toronto canoe clubs, West Rouge and Balmy Beach, were on hand to provide instruction and guidance to local residents, most of whom had never paddled anything other than a standard recreational canoe. West Rouge Canoe Club coach John Holland and his teams of young boys and girls provided outstanding demonstrations in war canoe racing. The boys team is cur- rently the Canadian Bantam cham- pion in this form of racing and they demonstrated the techniques which 7 3 won them this title in July. Several Port Perry and area canoe enthusiasts took the oppor- tunity to try the single and two- person racing kayaks, again under the watchful eye of expert instructors. And a lot of novices took advan. tage of the chance to try the war canoes and discover for themselves the importance of team-work_ Lang Cope of Port Perry was ip. strumental in organizing this after- noon of canoeing. Believing that sheltered Lake Scugog is a natural setting for recreational and com- petitive canoeing, Mr. Cope has worked hard over the summer to get the Scugog Canoe Club off the ground. He was pleased with the amount of public interest generated by the demonstrations on Sunday afternoon. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings of this week (weather per- mitting) the Canoe Club is inviting any interested people to the Port Perry waterfront to try the war canoes. Kids are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Local residents from the Port Perry area, some with a lot of paddling experience, others with very little, had the opportunity to try the 15 person war canoes which measure 30 feet and weigh over 200 pounds.
