LJ The XL Eagles, on their way to the Championship, chalked up wins against Toronto Whistlers 4-2, Grimsby 2-0, Kilbride 6-4 and the finalists from Hamilton 7-2 in eight innings. Against the Whistler Tavern team from Toronto, the 4-2 win avenged a previous loss handed to Port Perry in the Elmvale Tournament back in June. Toronto started early scoring twice in the second inning on four base hits against Eagle starting pit- cher Al Heintzman. After that brief flurry, Heintzman settled down allowing only three more hits the rest of the way. Port got back into the contest in their half of the third inning when Rick Blohm singled, moved to se- cond on a ground out, and scored on a Rick Evans RBI single. Dave Dickson followed with a triple to center field scoring Evans and tying the game 2-2. In the fifth inning, Bill Bridge led off with a base hit, followed by another hit by Rick Evans. This set the table for pitcher Al Heintzman as he crashed a triple off the fence at the 260 foot mark in center field bringing in both runners to capture the win. Game two saw Port come up against Grimsby, and in what was to be the best game in the tourna- ment, edge the local favourites 2-0 on a solid two hitter by veteran lef- ty Ken Irvine. He kept them off balance all night with his assort- ment of rises, drops and change ups in pitching his best game of the year to date. Grimsby had imported a hot shot junior pitcher from the United States and he proceeded to mow down the first thirteen Port batters throwing mostly fastballs and jum- ping half way to home plate. In the deciding fifth inning, Port Perry - finally got to him when right fielder Al Heintzman started things with a single and after one out, catcher Paul Graham teed off with a triple to the gap in right center scoring Heintzman. Bill Bridge followed with a two out, two strike squeeze bunt to bring in Heintzman and lock up the 2-0 victory for the Eagles. In the semi-final game against Kilbride, Port was in continual trou- ble booting the ball around as pit- cher Lawrie Williams watched routine grounders thrown around so badly three or four players got to handle the ball on each play. Inside of two innings Port made five errors to give Kilbride a 4-2 lead after three innings. ' Eventually sanity set in and the players regrouped behind Williams getting fourteen outs in the last fif- teen players to come to the plate for Kilbride. B To say Port rallied would be an understatement in this game as the never say die gang commenced a comeback in their final at bat to score four runs to win the contest 6-4. The rally started innocent enough as the first two batters struck out and grounded out to leave nobody on and two out. Things - began to happen when Rick Evans legged out an infield hit to get the comeback started. Dave Dickson followed by walking on a full count and Jay Williams walked on four pitches to load the bases. Lawrie Williams was up néxt and he also walked on a full count to bring in Evans to narrow the score to 4-3. Next up was hot hitting right fielder Al Heintzman who on the first pitch delivered a solid smash to clean off the bases with his three RBI double and give Port the victory 6-4. 'In the Championship game against last years champs from Hamilton Port started Al Heint- zman on the mound and fell behind 1-0 in the first inning on back to back hits by Hamilton. Hamilton again scored in the third inning to knot the score 2-2. After this inning Heintzman went on to retire sixteen of the next seventeen batters. The game went into extra innings and Port didn't waste much time, when after one out, Colin Wackett singled, Rick Evans singled, Rick Blohm delivered an RBI single scor- ing Wackett, Jay Williams reached first on a fielders choice scoring Evans, Larry Pilkey singled in Blohm and Heintzman hit a double cleaning off the bases to make the final score 7-2. The tournament games Port Eagles were involved in were quite a exciting to say the least as they kept coming back from deficits all the time to win the games. It was good to see the great" pitching, solid defense and timely hitting happen- ing together. In league play, last week, the Eagles wrapped up their regular schedule with a 3-1 victory over the Oshawa Juniors. The Juniors had Spike Howard on the mound and he pitched a great game to keep the contest close. Lawrie Williams pitched the com- plete game gaining the win, allow- ing five hits while striking out twelve batters. Port scored two runs in the fourth inning on hits by Dave Dickson, Rob Evans and Lawrie Williams. An inning later, Ken Ir- asa , > SI ey vine doubled and scored on Ken Bryant's RBI single to left field. This year the league is holding a double-knock out tournament in Greenbank on the weekend of September 19-20 to determine the league champion. More details on this tournament will follow in next weeks paper. The XL Eagles now gear up for the O.A.S.A. Intermediate 'C' Championship Tournament in Palmerston this coming weekend by playing against the host team at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the main diamond.
