Port started impressively on Saturday defeating Palmerston 3-0 and Petrolia 9-7. On Sunday the wheels came off as they crashed to earth getting pounded by North Fredrick 10-3 and edged by Bracebridge 2-0. Saturday against hometown favourites from Palmerston, star- ting pitcher Al Heintzman fashion- ed a one-hitter while striking out nine batters. In this game only two Palmerston batters made it as far as first base. ; Port Perry started dramatically in the opening inning as Rick Evans singled and Jay Williams hit a towering homerun to right field to help Port jump oul to an early 2-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Larry Pilkey homered for the insurance run to make the final score 3-0. Game two was a wild affair with the Eagles winning in nine innings 9-7. The lead changed five times in this thriller. Port led 1-0 after the first inning when Rick Evans scored on Jay Williams' RBI triple. They increased their lead to 3-0 in the se- cond on hits by Rob Evans, Ken Bryant and Colin Wackett. Palmerston roared back to tie the game 3-3 in their half of the second on a hit batsman, a walk and two base hits. Port rebounded with two homeruns in the third inning when Jay Williams and Larry Pilkey both Petrolia's half they closed the gap to 5-4 to knock started Lawrie Williams from the game and Ken Ir- vine came on in relief. Petrolia gained the lead in the sixth on two base hits and an error to make the score 7-5. Port Perry rallied for two runs in the seventh when Larry Pilkey hit a two run homer after two were out to tie the game 7-7. In the ninth inning, Rick Evans was hit by the pitch, Dave Dickson and Jay Williams had hits to win the game for Al Heintzman who had came in for the last three innings to get the win. On Sunday morning, Port met North Fredrick and received a thrashing as they made five errors in key situations to hand North Fredrick eight unearned runs in their lop sided victory. Heintzman took the loss with relief help from Ken Irvine. Port then met up with Bracebridge and a classic pitching duel was fought as Port's Lawrie Williams and Bracebridge pitcher Mike Slaton both to seed one hitter in the game as the Eagles lost 2-0. The damage was done in the se- cond inning when Williams walked the first man he faced and the next batter sacrificed him to second base - and was safe himself on a dropped ball on the play. The next two bat- ters were retired on a sacrifice bunt and a pop up in the infield. Bracebridge then hit a grounder that was bobbled and both runners scored on the play. Port Perry managed only a scratch single by Rick Evans as Slaten retired the twenty-one bat- hit safely to make the score 5-3. In Team Galley Fish & Chips A. The top five teams in the "A" Division will be competing in a dou: ble knockout tournament that starts with a double header this Friday night. All games will be held at Green: bank and the first game ofr Friday night will start at 7:00 p.m. and will have Stouffville (who have won the 1987 Intermediate "A" Champion: ship) opposing Oshawa. This new Tournament playoff for- mula is designed to finish up the fastball season in good weather and stay away from the 'below zero" playoff games that occurred last year ., For fastball fans in the area this should be a rewarding weekend as the top teams in this area go head to head to determine local fastball supremacy ters on eight flyouts and thirteen ground balls in the infield. This was the Eagles fifth trip to the tournament in the past five years with one second place finish, three third place finishes and one quick exit. Hopefully next year the squad will again mount a challenge akg wilh gk : Members of the Port Perry Eagles con- gratulate the team from Bracebridge Sunday afternoon after the Eagles lost 2-0 and were eliminated from the OASA tournament in Palmerston. It was a tough loss for the Eagles who opened the tournament on Saturday with and try to attain the goal they have been seeking, but falling just short. Many thanks from the players go out to the Port Perry fans who came out to Palmerston to cheer for them as it was greatly appreciated. The season winds down this com- ing weekend with the league tourna- two wins. But Sunday was a different story as Port Pee Wees advance to final game in league After a long season of great fastball, the Greenbank All Stars hosted the York-Durham Pee Wee I*astball League year end tourna- ment which involved Greenbank, Port Perry, Unionville, Aurora, Claremont, Newmarket, Stouffville and East Gwillumbury. The Greenbank All Stars started their first game with a 7-6 win over Newmarket. Scoring for Greenbank were John Ennis (2), John Chronis, Peter Loughran, Mark Shepherd, Ken Winslow and Barclay Phoenix. The preceeding players all had good hits and did some great work in the field as well as Danny Sluggett who made some great catches in the outfield. The win over Newmarket put Greenbank up against Greenbank's arch-rivals, Port Perry Port Perry did some great work against Greenbank where they showed great skill and baseball talent to a 3-0 win After a devastating loss against Port Perry, Greenbank now had to play Newmarket again. Greenbank had problems with their bats which resulted in a 6-3 win for Newmarket. Newmarket scored 6 times throughout the second and third in- nings and it wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when Greenbank got their first run. It was John Chronis who cracked a single to centre-field and was driven home by Brett Puckrin"s homerun over the centre- fielders head and made the score 6-2 for Newmarket. Scoring the other run for Greenbank was Dan Slug- gett who was driven home by John Chronis and made the final score 6-3 in favour of Newmarket. This loss for Greenbank resulted in elimination from further play in the tournament. The champions of the York Durham tournament was Clare- mont who defeated Port Perry in the final game 12-7 The second place, silver medalists. team was Port Perry ment in Greenbank Friday, Satur- day and Sunday. Port Perry opens against the Gamblers Friday night at 9 p.m. in the second half of a dou- ble header headed by Stouffville and the winner of the MCL/ACL game being played in Oshawa Wednesday night. the team lost two straight and bowed out of the competition. (see story for details). Meanwhile, the Eagles and Greenbank Gamblers will be in the Oshawa and District final league tournament to be held this weekend in Greenbank. Should be some great fastball action there. who were defeated by Claremont in the final game. The third place, bronze medalists, team was Aurora who were ousted by Port Perry. This weekend was filled with great fastball and fun. Each and every team should be congratulated on their fine efforts and attitudes. A special thanks goes towards the Seagrave Park Board for the use of their diamonds in the tournament. Thanks to all who spent many hours on planning and organizing the tournament and making the weekend enjoyable and memorable for everyone.
