2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 15, 1987 Filter system in Birdseye pool could cost $12,000 Scugog Township council will decide early in the new year whether to foot the bill for a new filter system at Birdseye Pool in Port Perry. On Monday afternoon, councillors asked roads superintendent Ronn MacDonald to find out exactly how much it will cost to replace the pre- sent filter system, which is 27 years old. He estimated the cost at about $12,000. Also, the popular swimming spot for Scugog residents and visitors alike will have to be repainted before next summer, at a cost of about $4,000. MacDonald told council that even though the pool itself remains struc- turally sound, the filter system is worn out and because of the age, it's difficult to find replacement parts. He said Monday the aging filter system is not capable of handling the heavy use the pool gets. "It is 27 years old. It wasn't built for the number of people using the pool these days," he told council. In 1983. the municinalitv spent $14,000 on major renovations and repairs to Birdseye Pool. This summer, the pool was ordered shut for a couple of days by the Regional Health Unit because the water clarity was not up to ac- ceptable standards. After winning two games in the tournament in Palmerston on Satur- day, the Eagles lost two straight the next day in the double knock-out event for the Ontario Amateur Soft- ball Association Intermediate C title. In their final loss to Bracebridge by a 2-0 score, the Eagles ran into a red hot Bracebridge pitcher who completely shut down the powerful Port Perry bats with a no-hitter. Eagle hurler Lawrie Williams allowed just one base hit in the los- ing cause. A large contingent of faithful Port Perry fastball fans made the trip to Palmerston over the weekend.
