Grants for new farmers An eligible new farmer will receive $38,000 in grants over seven years under a new $97.5 million in- itiative called Ontario Farm-Start. This Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food program will provide new farmers with the cash flow they need, particularly during the difficult first years of farming, because of high capital re- quirements, fluctuating commodity prices and incomes, and the cost and availability of credit. New farmers will receive a total of $38,000 in grants over seven years with an initial grant of $11,000. The amount will be reduced each year by $2,000 until years six and seven when the grant will taper off by $1,000 with the final grant in the last year worth $1,000. The program is effective January 1st, 1988 and is expected to help more than 2,000 people become new farmers in Ontario. Farm-Start applicants will be allowed to register with the pro- gram and spend up to three years preparing for full-time financing. During that period, they would receive assistance in financial management from the ministry. Grants would begin following this preparatory period. Farm-Start ap- plicants will also be able to par- ticipate in the OFFIRR (Ontario . Family Farm Interest Rate Reduc- tion) program which reduced the in- terest rate on debt down to eight percent. Ontario Farm-Start will replace the Beginning Farmer Assistance Program (BFAP), which provided rebates on part of the interest on farm loans over a five-year period. Controlling Twitchgrass With Atrazine Atrazine can be used effectively to kill twitchgrass (quackgrass) in corn but must be used properly. It takes 4 pounds per acre of actual atrazine to kill twitchgrass -- that should be put on in two applications of 2 pounds per acre each, rather than all at once. The first applica- tion should be put on before the field is plowed. Control will be better if plowing can be delayed at least a week after spraying. Area 4-H'er Captures Silver Dollar Award Scott Wilson, Epsom, was award- ed the prize for the top dairy quiz in the recent 4-H Silver Dollar Competition. Scott was among 54 dairy com- petitors from fourteen counties to participate in the prestigious com- petition. David Beatty, Cannington, placed second overall in the calf conformation class and third in showmanship. Kelly O'Connor, Pickering, plac- ed second overall in the Showman- ship division. The Durham West team placed fourth overall in the four part competition of quiz, essay, showmanship and conformation.
