a Ti a 2 S oe 1 EF PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 22, 1987 -- 25 Coach George Burnett pleased with training camp MoJacks prepare for the Jr. C. season The Port Perry MoJacks will open their 1987-88 Junior C hockey season this Thursday evening (Sept. 24) with an exhibition tilt against Schomberg. Game time is 8:00 PM at the Scugog Arena. And this coming Sunday night, the MoJacks will again be on home ice for their second pre-season en- counter against the Ajax Axemen, one of the stronger teams last year in the Central Junior C loop. The MoJacks opened training camp on September 17 with nearly 50 skaters hoping to crack a spot in the line-up, and head coach George Burnett told the Star he is very pleased with the calibre of talent on the ice. "I'm happy with the way things have gone so far. Compared to last year at this time, I feel more confi- dent and optimistic," he said follow- ing a work-out Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. ) Burnett is heading into his second season at the helm of the MoJacks, and last year, he fashioned one of the most competitive and exciting Junior C squads in Port Perry in a long time. The team finished first in the Division, swept Lindsay in four games in the opening playoff series, then lost the second round to Ux- bridge in six games in a series that drew packed houses in both Port Perry and Uxbridge. Two of the games were decided in overtime. A solid nucleus of players from last year's squad will again be in uniform this season for the MoJacks. These include last year's captain Andy Sutch, defensemen Darrin Nesbitt and Clay Dempsey; for- wards, Greg Warriner, John Hart- ford, Craig Menzies, Rob Baker, Bob St. Jules and Dave Burnett. Forward Len Giacalone is working out with the Oshawa Junior B's and has indicated he will play in Port Perry if he fails to make the roster in Oshawa. Both last year's goaltenders Brian Tarleton and Paul Goreski are at the MoJacks camp this year. Three newcomers have already been sigfied to cards for the up-. coming season. Thane Ellis, a for- ward, played Junior hockey last year in the Windsor area; Dean Smethurst, also a forward is from the Oshawa area, as is defenseman Chris Edmonson. Several Midget age players from Port Perry have been 'very im- pressive during training camp, ac- cording to Burnett. He noted War- ren Geer, Clair Cornish, Brad Mei: zies, Derek Dexter, John Harman and Dave Culbert as ones who have caught his eye. Burnett and his coaching assistants Garnet Warriner and Rick Wilson are going to have some tqugh decisions to make over the next two weeks in selecting the players to round out the roster. Part of the reason for the MoJack success in 1986-87 was the strength of their specialty teams-power plays and penalty killing. Burnett said he plans to work hard on these areas again this season. And he'll be stressing team and individual -- ATTENTION -- Broomball Players Anyone interested in playing Men's Broomball, come to the Port Perry Arena on Sunday, September 27th, 1987 at 3:00 PM for registration and to play. The Central Junior C League this year has been re-aligned into two divisions, North and South, with the MoJacks in the North along with rival Uxbridge Bruins, Little Britain Merchants, Lindsay Muskies, Lakefield Chiefs, and the Madoc Hurricanes. The Chiefs, are all-Ontario Junior C defending champions and Burnett said he expects Lakefield and Ux- bridge will be strong in the North Division again this season. The South Division has Ajax Ax- emen, Bowmanville Eagles, Port Hope Panthers, Cobourg Cougers, ho Port Perry MoJacks head coach George Burnett and assistants Garnet Warriner (left) and Rick Wilson have a lot of good reasons to be smil- ing as the team opened training camp in prepara- tion for another Junior C hockey season. Several fine players from last year's squad are return- Wellington Dukes and a new entry from Trenton which last year played out of Brighton. The teams will play an inter- locking schedule, but the majority of games will be against divisional opponents. The coaching staff will have several pre-season games in which to take a close look at the players who will round out the roster. As mentioned, they start this Thursday night against Schomberg Junior C's and then meet Ajax on Sunday. On Oct. 1, they will meet Ajax in Pickering, on Oct. 3, the team will travel to Manvers for a game against Little Britain, and they will close out the pre-season schedule on Sunday Oct. 4 against the Mer- chants at the Scugog Arena. First league game is October 8 in Port Hope, and the first regular season home game is Sunday, Oc- tober 18 with Wellington Dukes in town. Despite the loss in the playoffs to Uxbridge, last year was considered a success for Junior C hockey in Port Perry. And with a new season just around the corner, there are a lot of factors which suggest the 67-88 MoJacks will be highly competitive and exciting for hockey fans in Port Perry and Scugog Township. ing to the line-up and there are other good pro- spects in camp (see story). Coach Burnett told the Star he likes what he's seen so far on the ice. The team will host Schomberg Junior C's in an exhibition game at Scugog Arena this Thursday ' evening.
